New to the Washington hunting system
« on: July 25, 2011, 09:45:12 AM »
Hello all, I moved here to Washington about a month ago from Nebraska.  I have been looking at the hunting regulations and just a little confused on how this all works.  I am mainly an archery hunter and come from a state where you buy archery tags for deer and antelope online every year and they are good statewide.  I am open to hunting anywhere in the state as long as I can get in, but had a few questions.  Are all elk and deer tags based off a point system or is there a way to hunt deer and elk every year by buying an over the counter tag?  And if I am reading it right, is there no point system for fall bear hunting or does that work?  Im just very confused on having to deal with the point system and the preferred unit system.  Any help would be great in getting this figured out, I;m sure these questions have been asked but thanks for the responses in advance!

Point system is only for the special hunts listed under special hunts.  Over the counter tags are available for the units/areas listed under each weapon category along with the seasons and bag restrictions.  The big one is you have to choose eastside or westside of the Cascades for elk hunting.  Deer is statewide in the units listed.  No points for fall bear as it is an over the counter tag.

Welcome to WA.

 :yeah:
Points only come into play when applying for special permit hunts, but since the drawings for those have already been conducted for this season you won't have to worry about that.  As lokidog said, the only real thing you'll need to pay attention to is having to choose east vs. west side for elk.  Deer tag you can pick up any time.  Only other thing I can think is if you were born after 76', you'll have to either take hunter's education or show proof that you have done so in another state.

From there, happy hunting and welcome to Washington!

Sorry - I put my year of birth on accident (76').  If you were born after January 1st, 1972 you are required to show proof of having completed hunter's ed.

Check the regulations for how long you need to live here before you are considered a resident. That got me when I first moved here :(

Good luck
