First Year Muzzle Loading.

This will be my first year going muzzle loading...although i will not be hunting, i'm saving my tag for modern but will be taking my girlfriend out this season. It is her first year carrying a gun and i thought it'd be cool if she went muzzleloading + it gives me more time to be out in the field . I need some tips though , whats a good muzzle loader to buy? I want a fairly accuarte one that can shoot over 100 yds. I've heard that now days muzzle loaders and pretty dang accurate out past 150 yds. Any Suggestions?

One of the best inlines available now that is legal for hunting here, is the Knight. Another option would be the CVA Elkhorn. There are some good threads on here on this very subject. Just go back a few months and read all of them. You'll find lots of good information and opinions. As far as distance that you can shoot and kill game with a muzzleloader- it's not so much the gun as it is the person shooting it. I prefer to shoot no further than 100 yards and I'd really recommend, especially for a first time muzzleloader hunter, to limit shots to no further than that, with 75 yards as a maximum distance being even better.

Cva elkhorn. Mine has been great! I have owned more then a few and its a great gun. They are affordable and shoot great. Not heavy to pack either.

Most of the guns out there now all are pretty accurate over a hundred yards.  It all comes down to how much you want to spend.  Cva is a good starter gun and cheaper.  I have the knight disc extreme it is more on the pricey side.  They also have the knight bighorn wich is about a hundred bucks cheaper than the disc.  I would recomend the knight.

The ones you are mentioning that shoot past 150 yds are shooting with 209 primers, pyrodex pellets ( 150 gr) plus scopes.

Washington has different regs. No 209 primers, no optics. So limited to around 100 yds. 150 yds would be pushing it. My farthest shot was around 130 yds on a cow elk.

I like 100 gr triple 7 powder with RWS musket caps. I think the musket caps not hot enough to shoot the pyrodex pellets accurately. Have experimented quite a bit with them ( pyrodex) with my Knight Big Horn and CVA and shot much better with the triple 7 lose powder:twocents:

If you buy anything buy a 50 cal. It is real tuff to find .54 cal stuff without a lot of looking.

i agree 50 cal. is the easiest to find sabots and accesories for. the knight and cva elkhorn are good rifles. good luck this season.

I would take exception to this statement.  I have Knight MK-85, Knight DISC with Western Kit and even a Renegade with a GM-LRH barrel.  Any of these will shoot accurately past 150 yards with 100-110 grains of T7-3f and open sights.  Granted for me to take a shot that long everything would have to just right - but it certainly could be done.

If ya can find a used blackdiamond by T/C is a good one..They discontinued it years ago. I shoot 90g of T7 and a 300 gr Barnes accurately to a 100 yards...150 is doable but like stated everything has to be right.

you are wrong about that.  #11 cap 777 3f powder not 209

First year for me also, after a lot of research on this site I bought a Knight Bighorn yesterday at wholesale sports in Burlington for 399.00 Haven't shot it yet, but it looks awesome in camo and looks like a well made gun.
