Called in 4 does with a blade of grass
« on: July 26, 2011, 06:18:37 PM »
Exactly as I titled it.  No joke, I was just relaxing out in our big grass field enjoying the sun.  I was bored so I tried to make a whistle with a blade of grass between my thumbs like I did when I was younger.  Not a minute after I started making the sound two does came trotting in to no more than 15 yards.  They were both bleating like crazy and slowly walking directly at me.  I was sitting in the grass with my normal cloths on...  I moved they circled around, I made the sound again and they started coming close again.  I moved they jumped back about 100 yards, they started coming back again!  Then they started snorting and took off.

Later I wondered if it was just some weird coincidence.  So I tried it again at my house on the back porch.  A different doe came in no more than 3 minutes after I started.  She was snorting and stomping like crazy.

Did it again about an hour later, the same doe came back again to about 15 yards.

So the moral of this story.  If you are hunting and nothings working. Pick up a blade of grass about a quarter inch in width and start making some sounds with it.

Im sure it sounded like a wounded fawn.    :IBCOOL:

Cool ! Always neat to interact with animals like that. Not sure I will add it to my hunting techniques. Have a great season. Mike

I have no doubt that many-a-native has used that technique.

I didnt use a blade of grass but I did call in a doe on Sunday.  It a lot of fun some times.  There were a few off in the trees that were blowing and stomping around.

That's awesome.  Thanks for sharing.  I remember showing my boys that trick (i.e whistling with a blade of grass).  They thought it was so cool.   :chuckle:

I did this yesterday and it was amazing!!  The doe came within feet of me and my wife.  After she busted us and ran off,  I called a gain and she came right back. It was very cool and made my wife think I was Mr. woodsman.  :IBCOOL:

Works on bucks sometimes also.
Crappy video but I called this buck in while standing on the side of the road.  I was in full camo but was just standing there.  He charged to within 20 yards.

Crappy video but I was trying to call him back to see if he would charge again.  He was a little less interested the second time.

I HAVE THIS HAPPEN FREQUENTLY WHEN I USE MY RABBIT DISTRESS CALL FOR PREDATORS.  THE HIGH PITCH SQEALING BRINGS THEM CLOSE.  EVEN WHEN THEY SPOT ME THEN WILL CONTINUE WITHIN FAIRLY CLOSE RANGE.  I WAS TRYING TO GET EITHER A BOBCAT OR COYOTE CALLED IN EASTERN IDAHO AND ALL I SAW WAS DOES AND FAWNS ALL DAY.

A really!  A good thing to know because my range is limited with my recurve!  Good to know I could most likely tag a doe if need be!

Called in a couple of wild dogs with a blade of grass a few years back during archery season.  Shook me up for a few hours.  They were close and looking for an easy meal.  Best to carry a gun when sounding like a fawn in distress.
