getting inserts out?

so the other day i missed a target (imagine that ) and buried the arrow into some wood/rubber mat. i pulled the arrow out and no field tip so i figured it just pulled the insert out. i went to put another insert in it last night and i realized it broke the insert. i cant screw another tip onto it because it broke off at the bottom of the threads. anyone have any ideas how to get it out? its a 100gr brass h.i.t. insert.

Carefully heat it up with a lighter? Done that before to melt the glue then maybe use a paper clip or something to free it out.

HIT inserts go in with epoxy.  No way to get it out short of cutting your arrow 2 inches shorter.

I didn't use the hit epoxy. I don't really want to heat the carbon shaft. Thanks guys. Anyone else?

If you used hot melt then heat it why rotating it,screw the point into what's left, then when its hot pull it out with pliers. If you used epoxy of any kind its pretty much junk. If you heat the shaft gets to hot it can hurt the carbon and the fumes off the carbon and epoxy when it heats up is very toxic.

I used gorilla impact tough super glue. On a side note it is the best stuff I have ever used. I tried a bunch of different glues and with the ammount of arrows I shoot into carpet bails it was eating up inserts. I have never lost an insert with this stuff, some of the old arrows I have acutally have the first 3" of camo wrap worn away but are still on their original insert. Works great of fletchings too.

That's how I was doing it when I was using the heat reversible glues, but there is nothing for a field tip to grab onto.

I guess ill have to try the extractor or just chalk it up and toss it in the death bucket...

Super glue...might be able to dip the end in acetone and loosen it up.  Get a can from Home Depot or Lowes.  Hole in the top is big enough to put the whole end of the arrow in.  The remainder can use to clean up the superglue from old vanes you scrape off.  Make sure you remove the nock though the acetone will melt it.

Put a drill bit slightly smaller than the shaft inner diameter in the nock end and swing away.  It'll come out fiercely, so be sure to swing in safe direction.  I've done it plenty times with the HIT epoxy glue and also Goat Tuff and not had one damage the carbon yet.  Make sure to check the carbon integrity before gluing another insert in by rolling the tip of the arrow between your thumb and index finger trying to crush it listening for cracks like you would hear when bending and rolling an arrow checking before shooting.  The arrow is basically shot now, so there's nothing lost by getting it out and seeing if it can be reused.  It may have cracked the carbon when it hit the wood anyway, but it's worth checking.

Goat tuff is great glue! I use it on everything. Sure makes my ink bleed on my wrapps if I get to much on the base of the vanes A little bit of that stuff goes a long way!

This is a good idea.

I've seen a guy use a long piece of drill rod and a big rubber band and shoot the insert out. Worked great.

Yeah I kinda agree with this one except take a 2 or 3 in. drywall screw and try screwing it into the insert .. if the screw holds heat up the screw and pull it out with pliers ....

I think the threads of his field tip are in the insert.

I've used a couple of techniques. 

one, drill a screw into the insert. (works even if threads are gone, just make sure it grabs and doesn't expand the insert too much or it will crack the arrow.)  Then grab on the screw with locking pliers and then put the arrow in vice or have someone hold onto it.  Pull hard, be ready to fly backwards if it decides to pop out. 

Other technique ive used for broken nocks. I know you are talking about inserts, but it might work.  Use a drill bit the diameter of the inside of your shaft.  put the arrow in a vice or drill press and very carefully drill it out.  This technique is hard and often ruins an arrow, but it is last ditch.  So its either give it a go or toss the arrow.

The insert itself broke, not the threads of the field tip. I can see the brass of the insert.

If there's none of the field point left in there, then there's also very little of the insert left in there.  The drill bit will work easy.
