Stupid, Stupid Question...

Okay guys, I got myself in a crappy situation.  I bought a new string for my recurve.  Turns out I bought the wrong one.  I know I needed a string 3 inches shorter than my bow length so I bought a 59inchamo string for my 62 inch bow.  Little did I know, I actually needed a 62inch amo string because they COME 3 inches shorter...  Well now I am stuck with a string that is too short. 

I can't return the string because I have serving on it and some wear.  It strings up fine, I just had to take some twists out of it.  So here is my dumb question.  Is it safe to use this string? or will it snap and ruin my 700 dollar bow...  I don't want to trash the string because it cost me 40$ but if I have to, I have to. 

It shoots fine, I just don't know if it is structurally sound anymore because it lost some twists...  It has the proper number of strands for my draw weight.  It shouldn't come undone either because the strand ends were spliced into the string.

to my understanding twists have nothing to do with the strength of the string it just makes it last longer by keeping the strands tight.

On a recurve a shorter string will give you higher poundage and longer brace height. Twists are for adjusting string length in small amounts.
I am not sure I would use that string since.the bow was designed and built for a certain length string. To get the marked Dw at the marked draw length. I always heard that for Longbow and recurve strings should be 5-6 in shorter than unstrung bow tip to tip. But don't shoot a lot of trade so not positive.

But the thing is, I took twists out and now its at the marked brace height and draw weight... So everything is normal the only thing is the string has less twists.     So the only real worry I have is structural integrity of a string with less twists.  Theoretically though it should be just as strong...  Ugghh this is killing me.

Roughly how many twists per inch are in the string? As long as it has a fair amount you are fine. It should stretch a bit also. Then you can twist it back up a bit. Can you post a pic showing the string strung up? To see twists?

I would say there is 1.25-2 twists per inch.

Not this one.  This is a martin hand spliced flemish string.  its like 40 bucks.  Pricey I know but I like them over the traditional flemish strings.  And 40 bucks is a whole 5 hour shift of work lol.

I feel comfortable with anything more than 1 per inch. I think you will be just fine with that string.

Okay this is reassuring, It shoots great and i've put a couple hundred arrows through it so I think it is fine.  Ill just replace this one after the hunting season.  That way I get some use out of it.  Thanks!

jeez... yeah, i'd shoot it!  or save it for a back up in your hunting quiver and get another the correct length  (though i must say, if it's still got twists after working it out to fit the BH you're good to go!)

I understand where your coming from, but just think if that string snapped and whapped you in the eye. not to mention every time you pull back there is going to be this voice in your head whispering "is it gonna snap this time?".

Well I did just this, I emailed martin told them the situation.  They are sending me a replacement!  Funny thing is I bought the string a year ago as a spare.  Didn't know it wasn't the right one until just recently because I retired my old string.  So they gave me a new one even though I bought it last year!  Pretty nice of them!
