Need some help on Wirehaired Pointer

I need some help guys, I'm thinking to get a Wirehaired Pointer . I do have some experience but only with working dogs,  allways wonted to get a hunting dog just didn't have that chance. Now i think I'm ready to get  my first hunting dog. Why this breed? Seems you can use them for all kinds of hunting needs. What I'm looking for? any info. from you guys who has any experience with this breed.

Great dogs, I use mine for ducks mainly but do quite a bit upland hunting also.  Until WA banned dogs for coyotes he was my coyote hunting partner.  He would lay along side me while I was calling and I never needed to check the upwind side of the stand, he did that with his nose.  A little grumble from him and I knew something was coming.

Usually dog can do as much as you capable of training. What I'm looking for to get info on their personalates. Every breed has something special.

   If your considering a gwp I would contact him.  DD's are great dogs.  Hopefully my newpup comes next week.

Machias, why are you selling your Griff?

I'm not a bird hunter, thought I would try it when I sold my bear and lion dogs 2 years ago, but I realized I'm much happier following pursuit dogs.  Has nothing to do with Sam, he'll make someone a nice bird/waterfowl/blood trail dog.  I just want him to go to someone who loves to chase birds and waterfowl.

Vaz I love my wirehair. I bought her and her brother, who I gave to my dad. Wirehairs or DD's are a great personal dog. They always have to know where you are and what you are doing. My female, Sophie, would be a lap dog if I would let her on the couch. I also have a shorthair male and he is quite a bit more aloof than my wirehair, especially with strangers. She has been great around my kids and does good with our chihuahuas, although, she plays a little rough. With the cats, she has been taught they are off limits, but I still have to watch her when we are outside. Last year I did a ton of mountain biking and she went with me everywhere. These dogs are great athletes and she kept up with me on everything, but the steepest downhills. She swims like a fish, loves to retrieve, and can lock up on the faintest scent of a bird. These dogs are not good for small apartments, small yards, or inactive people. Good luck in your search and you can see some pictures of Sophie looking through some of my past posts.

the three I've been around in the kennel in the last two months have seemed to have a little separation anxiety. Once settled they seem to be fine. Two from the same owner, one is a little timid around new people, the other could care less. My friend Ralph has a very young pup from Cooke Canyon. We just got back from Sauvie Island HT today. His pup is very outgoing and is afraid of nothing. Can't say much about them because the four I personally know are all very different.

THe one good thing is they all work very well in the field including my buddy Ralphs who just had a few of his first formal workouts recently and put up some really nice, staunch points for a little guy.

You might check with Cooke Canyon- not sure if all the pups were gone or not but, always good to talk with as many long-time breeders as possible and form your own opinion based upon what answers you get to your questions. Most all breeders are a bit "kennel blind" when it comes to the dogs they breed. THey(breeders dogs) are like their children and everyone knows that their kids are better than the other peoples' kids right? I always recommend people talk to numerous breeders (or trainers) and choose which best fits our goals and needs.

All German breeds GSP n The GWP are great with people and love kids if there socialized right But you need to keep in mind you dont train pointing breeds like work dogs or retrieving breeds Pointing breeds learn a lot from mistakes they are not rewarded for ! I would be looking at the 1yr old that the hound guy has for sale..

cant go wrong with a wirehair.... go talk to Doug at Cookes. he trains them all... he will give it to you straight on the breeds..
