New Trail Camera

Im planning on getting a new trail cam  I've found one i really like and from my buddys i know is really good, its the bushnell trophy cam. i can get the fancy camo one for
167$ online and its 8mp, or i can get black for 157$ same 8mp.

but the one i wanna get is only 129$ the only difference is that its only 5mp

from you guys who have had both 5 and 8mp tell me is there a huge difference

I have heard the 5 mp model is more reliable and less likely to have problems. 5 megapixel pictures are all you need. I'd buy the less expensive one for sure. But having said that, I do not own either one. So take it for what it's worth.

It's true.. I have seen a couple of the 8's glitch.. Se with the real spendy HD ones..
I just bought a couple of the new small moultrie cameras and I like them better then the bushnell.

Higher quality picture with 8 MP than with 5 MP. . . While it might not matter much on animals immediately in front of the camera, if there was say a herd of elk fanned out in the ferns in front of your camera and a cow tripped it while a bull was visible 30-40 yards back, you might not be able to count points if it were too pixelated in the 5 MP. The points might be counted with the 8 MP camera.    It really just boils down to whether getting a bigger, higher quality picture is important or if you're just after so so quality that serves the bare purpose of scouting.  If it's the latter I'd almost go ultra cheap with a Tasco rather than a mid grade camera.

As far as camo or black goes, get a black one.  You can't see the camo if you're protecting your camera.  The difference between the two and more would be spent on a lock box and python cable if I were buying the camera.

I have an 8mp, I love it. Either way its a great camera. I'm approaching 9 months of use on ultimate lithiums and the batteries are still reading full charge. But you need a bear box, one bear decide to chew on mine and the box did its job. oh yeah you need to use sandisk SD cards in the camera!!!

I have the 5 and havent been real happy with it... batterys dead this year in 2 days..last year in cold weather I got lots of grey images or no pics with deer standing 5 ft in fron of it for hours

oh yeah, i would definantly get a bear box and thanks for the sandisk sd card part, that was my next question. and that picture is really nice

You can check my thread in the trail cam or deer section. I began with the 5.0 and after it got eaten I'm now using the more current 8.0 model. You can get a nice little box from Bushnell as well that works pretty good. Keep in mind that the bears will find it and want to bat it around and be a general nuisance. Also, I think that the Bushnell really only likes the Scandisk brand cards. Not sure if the newer models will accept others since I only have the Scandisk cards from when I had the 5.0 model. It is very user friendly, has a good trigger, and knock on wood has been problem free for me so far.

I just got the 8 mp low glow model Bushnell and put it out for the first time last Sunday.  Mine came with a lcd screen on it.  Can't tell you what the pics look like and how well its going to work but I can say having that screen helped a lot setting it up.  I set it to tale 3 pics then walked through, then checked my screen and put my bait where is have the best centered pics.  Also, i had a hard time finding a bear box for it if you do check out custom1 enterprises that bear box is way beafier then the Bushnell box.

Oh and this might help, I ordered my cam from a site called Hog Dog Supplies.  Cheapest Cabelas would sale my cam was 299.00 and I got it for 244.00.  Cabelas wouldn't even match the price.  I was nervous at first ordering it from Mike but I got a electronic receipt and a tracking number so I could track my order.  He's from Florida so it took a few days to get to Washington but the money saved was well worth it.  I'm sure you could get the cam you want way cheaper, he has many cam options.  Goos luck.

I biuld some really cool boxes for the Trophy cams. A few members have them. If you send me a PM I can get you some pics. You won't need one of them expensive python locks with my boxes as I use a better and cheaper system.

hey everyone, first of all i just wanted to say thanks! all of you guys helped me out alot.

I found a cam online for only 129.99 and i had a coupon for it which brought it to 105.80 or somthin so i couldnt pass the oppurtunity to get the cam, it was a 5mp bushnell trophy cam, its camo (i got camo because black was 14 bucks more ) any way so i told my aunt about it over the phone and since my b-day is august 7th she bought it for me  i told her it was way to much but she said she wanted to because she didnt get me anything foor christmas and my last b-day. all in all i would have probably done he 8mp but for that price im exstatic and it cost me nothing cause of my awesome aunt!

oh yeah you need to use sandisk SD cards in the camera!!!

Why is that?

I have an 8mp and I keep getting pics that are blown out from the IR flash if the subject is within 10' of the camera. Was thinking about covering up some of the bulbs.

I will vouch for Kris's box 

I use one for my trophy cam. Super easy to setup and aim. No wedging sticks behind the camera to get the angle right. A little on the heavy side, but im pretty sure it could survive a drop out of an airplane. I will try and get some pics of mine when I deploy it this weekend.

How much do your boxes run?

some foam padding and your local electrical supply center and buy some small utilty boxes

 I will be gone for over a week. When I get back I can send some pics and info on them to anyone who sends me a PM.

They are around 4.5-5 5lbs and can't be opened with a stick like some cheesy tin boxes.
