I guess it is just habit, I see alot of animals that actually lick the stumps more than the block and if you put salt on it year after year it helps get the salt in the ground I have see where deer and elk will actually dig stumps up that have had salt on them for 5 or ten years. I'm not real sure if it helps or not.
