I don't know about all those choices there guys.

I've heard that the 17 HMR is the one to beat, 1/2" groups at 1000 yards and can easily take down a charging Rhino at over 500 yards with one shot! Plus it doubles for home protection way better than any 12 gauge could even dream of.

Almost equal to the .22 LR   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

My Savage Model 10 LE 308. Shoots 877 yards with hunting ammo. I like it !!!!! :chuckle:

Point it at a 45deg angle and it will shoot farther then that LOL just because something shoots far doesn't mean anything. With the low energy at that range from a 308 I would never shoot a bear with at round at even close to that far.

Who said I was shooting at a bear ? Read my post............

How about you read the original post? He is looking for mainly a bear gun... what does your 308 and how far you can shoot it have to do with killing a bear and being a good cal for him to hunt bear with.

I won't even make a suggestion with such a vague request.  :chuckle:

How much do you want to pay for ammo?

How much do you want to pay for the gun?

Long range? what is that?

Do you reload?

Are you going to alaska?

Depending on your definition of long range,

will you be a turret twister/BDC or are we looking for MPBR?

How do you handle recoil?

How heavy do you like your rifle to be?

Assuming that "long range" is just a little farther out there than you feel comfortable shooting game with the .308 Win (i.e. under 500 yards), then I'd say the .300 Win Mag or .338 Win Mag in the 116 Savage would fit the bill.  http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/models/

If you're talking over 500 yards then the Edge would be in order..........or maybe like Bobcat said, and go with an Ultra Mag. :twocents:
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.
