GPS software recommendations
« on: August 09, 2011, 08:00:13 AM »
I just bought a garmin dakota 20 and I'm looking for the best software I can get for it.  I did a search on here for gps software and found a couple of options but they were from like 2007 so I was wondering if anyone knew of any good software that is newer or just had some general advice about what program to buy.
I'm willing to spend up to $300, I just want the best I can get basically.

Check out Delorme Topo North America. http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtdItemDetail.jsp?item=30465&section=10742

I have Topo USA 7 with my Delorme Earthmate and they upload to each other. You may be able to do that with your GPS and this software. Do some checking. It costs $100 to cover all of the US and Canada.

Depending on what you are trying to do with the GPS, look up Terrain Navigator, we use it for work...I use it for fun.

I have a friend that downloaded all the DNR land for the entire state of Washington for me. Shows everything, state, private, forest circus lands etc. The best. Section lines, elevations, roads, cities.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

 :yeah:

I just purchased the WA/ID/OR combo maps from these guys and installed in on my twp Rino 530HCx radios and love it so far.  I was able to "scout" on the computer, make some waypoints, move them to my handheld and check out new areas that I have missed in passed scouting attempts.  Shows private property (thought not the names on this map), DNR, State, USFS, etc using different colors on the map so you have a pretty good idea of where, especially on land that switches between private and public lands.   You can get the same programs for individual states that shows the landowner names (based on tax records) but they did not have that information for 2 counties that I like to hunt in so I passed and got the three state for the same cost ($99 for a chip, $129 to download, or $139 for CD).  I had a problem or two downloading the maps and they were great to help me out and send an extra cd when I had problems.
Doesn't have all the "travel" features that my phone has such as showing best prices for gas, where to eat, where to watch movies, but it has great topo features, every road in the mtns shows up, includes all GMU and hunting units for Washington, Idaho and Oregon, does include streets and addressed for every city, and is very detailed for what I was looking for in a map.
