Hangman B Antlerless Moose-Best Week In October?
« on: August 09, 2011, 08:53:48 AM »
Hey Guys,

I drew the Hangman B area for Antlerless Moose. I am very excited about this. I am going to use Archery equipment. I have been told that finding a moose is not that difficult, however getting to them and recovering them is the problem. I think I will be hunting the Mica Peak area. I have read a few threads that going to first week in October is not a good idea due to the heat? Is there a disadvantagee by not going the first week and waiting until the second or third week? I am told that weather is the main factor?

Any input or experience on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Brian

I don't think the timing matters all that much, given the new restrictions on 4 wheelers I'd wait till november when the leaves are down and spoilage isn't much of an issue, put in the time and you'll notch the tag no problem.

I had a tag in 09..opening day was cloudy and in the 50's the next day was rain and heavy hail and 30"s over night.. PM me I have access to some areas on Mica that hold lots of moose and able to get rigs into. U might have to donate some steaks to landowner but might be worth it if ya have to pack one out.

They will be patrolling it this year and if you are caught on paper companys land with a vehicle you will face heavy fines and maybe loss of your moose . so be carefull.. the moose are up high on mica and all the private land is low . :twocents:

Well, I went to Starr Rd today to check it out for my upcomming hunt on the 15th. I met a moose hunter as he was hiking out at the gate and he had just shot a bull moose at noon today. It was a young bull. I think he said it was 35 Inches or so. He was very happy. I chatted with him for awhile. From the guys I have talked to I think that they have taken about 4-5 moose off their already. I hope there are still some left when I get there! :dunno:

I will keep you posted.

Some guy holding out for a monster bull that i met at the gate said the same thing. If you care to share that info with me in greater detail please send me a PM if you get a chance.

It would be much appreciated.

Thanks Guys for all your input.

I was over there the past two days finding my way around. Sounds like there is good moose activity up there. IT was raining hard up there today and I wish I was up on the mountain, but just poking around this time. I will be back on the 14th with hopes off landing a well placed arrow in a nice cow moose!

I will keep you posted. Any and all info is welcomed!

Thanks,

Brian

its been cool over here and i would be hunting this week before the rifle deer hunters start showing up less traffic = seeing more animals... And shoot one in the road they are not fun in a canyon...

I am not sure what the rifle season is like at the Mica gate but Mike who works there said that right now (when I was there) was Elk Muzzleloader season and normally I would not be able to get close to the gate because there would be 20 rigs parked there. I was the only one there. He said since the non- motorized closure there will probably be little pressure. But I am expecting there to be other hunters up in there. No quads buzzing around should keep the moose in there normal patterns by the roads hopefully.

But thanks for the warning.

I guess I am gonna find out! :chuckle:

You should not need to crawl to the top of the peak.  Quite a few moose around, check with local landowners with habitat.  If you are taking a cow permission should not be difficult.  Those old gals are tough on family dogs and scare the hell out of kids at the bus stop.  Kind of nice to take one close to the front loader.

Well This moose hunting thing is all new to me and so is the area. If you have anyone or any area of landowners in mind I can check with PM me. I am all ears!

Thanks,

even with the quads buzzing around the moose are close to the road, the quads didn't bother them on my hunt, lots of moose low, you shouldn't have to go too far in from the gate to find a nice cow.

I Can't wait!!!! 1 week from now we will be chasing moose for our first time ever!!!!

Does anyone know what the deer and bear hunting is like on Mica?  I am lucky enough to be going along on this moose hunt and have a muti season deer tag and a bear tag, so just wondering what my chances are I will see something to hang a tag on ??  :dunno:

Thanks for your input!

had that tag last year....  You will have fun!!!!  It took me about 5 min of hunting...  The best advice I can give you is use an ATV..  Packing a moose out of that country on foot is a chore.. There are and will be plenty of moose for you to look through.. I wish I spent more time hunting.. Good thing I got it when I did. On the way home my alternator went out on my truck. I was close enough to the house to have family come and rescue me, my trailer, ATV's and a moose in the back of the truck!!!

So if you happen to find a trail of camera cards, let me know.  I lost about 8 of them out of my bag while I was there. :bash:
