Archery for deer
« on: August 10, 2011, 07:19:50 AM »
This will be my first year hunting Archery, and I want to get a feel for how most people hunt. for whitetail, it seems tree stand hunting is fairly common, but do many people stalk while hunting?

I mainly target mulies but last year I ended up getting a decent white tail in the early season.  I did a spot and stalk on it.  I think it was purely luck though.

Spot and stalk almost exclusively for mulies.  I have had good success.

Spot and stalk all the way.   I HATE stand hunting, not that I won't do it on occasion, but its usually in the form of watching a runway or crossing or something like that.  Thats for whitetails and Muleys or elk or moose for that matter.

The taking of a deer while stalking or still-hunting is most satisfying for me.
I'd just like to remind everybody that it's about the hunting, not just the killing. In other words, it's about the total experience, the sport itself and the challenge involved. Bowhunting, done right, is a justifiable and honorable pursuit. Done for the wrong reasons, simply chalking up kills and seeking personal glory, it's taking away rather than giving back to a principled way of life that has to be experienced to be understood. Spot and stalk all the way.... that is the hunt.... the shot is just the culmination, even without a shot taken it is all about the stalk.  Can't get a bigger adrenilin rush deer hunting than a tough stalk!

I mainly stand hunt but have done a few spot and stalks. I stalked for two days finding  what I thought was a three point but turned out to be a big 2. I would also find small cliffs and ledges and walk along the top, got on a  few mulies that way.

I acquired a tree stand about 8 years ago and never once have I set it up in a tree whilst hunting.  Always spot and stalk for me. It just gets too boring sitting in one spot and waiting for an animal while your mind is telling you to go check another spot.
I've spent most of my life hunting and fishing....the rest has been wasted

That is my biggest fear in a blind or tree.  I have to get out and try to get on them.

Try mixing it up. There's nothing quite like being at eye level to your game and anticipating their next move. I use to stand hunt all the time for whitetails in the midwest and was pretty successful, but since moving out here, it's been mainly spot and stalk. I have however stalked deer into areas that lead to good spots for a tree stand. Don't be stuck on one way because both have their advantages. You might even be sitting in a stand and see a buck that looks to be in a good position to stalk. You get the picture.

X2 Bowhiker, I got a black tail two years ago after spotting in my stand, then climbing down and stalking. I use a self climber because their fast up and down a tree.

I will stalk and move in the middle of the day, but if I have a good spot staked out-I'll be in the tree the first and last 2 hours of daylight.. (cant tell I've primarily been a whitetail hunter can you?)

Spot and stalk whitetail with a bow :yike: I have stalked close enough to does though, but a buck. I don't think so. I always like spot and stalk except archery for whitetail. Even those does are real skiddish.
