Olympic Unit Fire
« on: September 06, 2011, 08:45:36 AM »
Just heard about the 150 acre Duckabush fire which is where I was going to hunt for my Bull permit this year.  :bash: Don't know what I'm going to do now.  :dunno:

The last report said it should burn for a few more days.  It is in the Brothers Wilderness Area.  So far only really burning underbrush and dead stuff.

Excellent hunting after a burn. You are good to go!

They won't give you a point refund if your hunting area is burning will they?  :dunno: :chuckle: :bash:

The fire is only about 150 acres.  Will it really even affect your hunt?

By October I bet the fire will be out. And the elk will still be there. So it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't know if it will affect my hunt or not. Never had a fire where I was going before. Oh well, I have other options if it doesn't work out there

150 acres should have a minimal effect. That's not really a lot of land.

I think more of the issue is where the fire is located.  It is along the trail used to access the area.  In October, it should be fine.  But if someone were to want to bear hunt or deer hunt now or in the next few weeks, they would have to find new ways in.  There are lots of firetrucks and a few helicopters working in the area.  The helicopters have been getting water from the high lakes.  Also heard that the area burned/burning is closer to 400 acres now.

They are supposed to list what roads/trails will be closed.  The fire is now over 600 acres.  They measure the fire early in the mornings...before the hot, dry air moves in for the day causing it to grow.

The elk probably all ran to the park by now to get away from the fire  :bash:

FS closed the Brothers Wilderness Area today.  Not sure if your back up plan was still in that Wilderness.

The Olympic National Forest has closed the Brothers Wilderness Area because of a wildfire.

The fire is burning in the wilderness next to Olympic National Park. The U.S. Forest Service said Tuesday that visitors to the closed area can be fined between $5,000 and $10,000 and imprisoned up to six months.

The fire started Aug. 31 and has burned 1,230 acres.
