Savage model 99 308
« on: August 10, 2011, 02:26:15 PM »
I was just given a Savage Model 99 in 308 by my uncle.  The rifle is in great shape, I am thinking of using this year for deer.  Any recommendations for ammo?

I don't know about that.  You could just give it to me to make up for the one my Dad sold to his neighbor when I was away in the military...   :'(

Lincoln, that is tempting but I got this one because it is the one that my late father took his first deer with, and hopefully will be the one that my son takes his first deer with in a few years.  But a good try none the less.

I used hand loaded 150 grain Nosler partitions. Daughter shot her first deer with it last hear.

Got my first deer with the Savage 99 in .308.  Mine's a cheap date, loves the Federal 180gr softpoints.  Was pretty much broke when it was given to me, so I went to Sportman's and got two boxes of the cheapest ammo I could find.  Put a Nikon Prostaff scope on it and that thing is deadly.  Definately one of my favorite guns!

tsktsktsktsk    Shame on you.  I'm a much better choice for it to be given too   :chuckle: :chuckle:

Seriously I'd love to have one.  Saw one at a pawn shop years back in .308 with a scope for $350  Wish I had bought it.    I still have Grandpa's Savage 219 30-30 from 1940something.  It goes to a cousin on Dads side when I die...

You can go to and browse their recommendations.

I like it a lot.  I shot it a few years ago and really liked it.  My uncle has always used whatever ammo seemed like a good buy at the time so I don't think it is too picky.

check out this website for bullet choices.. although really in .308, 150-180gr i dont think you can find a factory sp that wont do the job on deer.. assuming it groups good in your old rifle..

Thanks hillbilli.  I am going to the new Corbon training facility in a few weeks so I will be puting a lot of lead down range.  i should be able to see what works out in it.
