dogs killed baby raccon
« on: August 11, 2011, 06:42:21 AM »
We came home yesterday and none of our 3 labs were there to greet us.  I could here them in the brush on the lake edge.  I was telling them to get back in there yard so they all 3 showed up right away.  We figured they had been chasing something.  After a mild scolding was getting tennis balls so they could swim in lake.  My middle child(dog) came up all proud with a baby raccoon (about 2 months or so)

2 of the 3 dogs were due in late June for rabies shots and the puppy this month.  I was waiting so I could get them all on the same schedule.  None of the dogs had any scratches or cuts.  The raccoon was not bloody.

Should I be worried?  Should I get there shots ASAP?
unfortunately our truck is in westport with the boat for fishing season so I really don't have a way to get 3 dogs to the vet. I could take them in the car if you all think it is important to get shots right away

What do you think
Thanks

They should already have their rabies shots, right?  If not you need to get them now.

Rabies vaccines are undergoing challenge studies it is believed most offer immunity for 7-10 years if not lifelong immunity.  This state regulates rabies vaccinations originally it was to eradicate rabies like all things once that happened the state just couldn't let go of the income and the control.  Many other states have lesser requirements and many places you can still give the rabies vaccine yourself.  The current 3yr vaccine took huge fights from the industry and there are published studies that show most vaccines confer 7-10 years of immunity.

Dont panic if the dogs have had at least one vaccine you are fine only worry if they havent been vaccinated.  Also there are public records of outbreaks and in which species so check your area health dept stats rabies is no longer as common as it once was due to rigorous vaccination efforts.  Now we have more issues with excessive vaccination in dogs and cats than we do with many of the diseases we vaccinate for...

now someone will come along and tell me how wrong I am  :chuckle: its all good I spent years discussing and researching vaccines with vets etc....the vaccine that is worthless and needs to be done about every 3 months is one for horses yet they say annual is ok...animal vaccines have undergone more testing and more continuous testing than human vaccines and most human vaccines are developed based on animal study and use...

I too was thinking that I could go a couple months past revacination date.  That is why I was waiting so I could make one expensive trip to vet.

I did not realize that tests have show vacines stay in system that long

Once again thanks for all the info.

As a kid my coon hound was chewed up real bad by a coon in our back yard while he was on his chain. i shot the coon as soon as i got out there (the little bastered really had a grudge) that being said i was doing the same thing and waiting until the vet came for all the dogs, mine was a month over due. because of the attack we called the game warden and had him take the coon, it turns out it was positive for rabies. we got the dogs vacinated right away and i got a booster since i had come incontact with the blood but no issue arose from it my dog died 3 years later at almost 13 natural causes. i think you should be fine.
