My wife shoots the same bow, granted, her draw is significantly longer.  I believe her bow is somewhere in the 48-50lb range.  The way it penetrates our targets at home, I would feel more than confident with her shooting a deer at 20-30 yards.  Just make sure he practices a lot.

DoubleJ, my wife shoots a diamond at the bare minimum requirements for draw weight and arrow requirements. At 20 yards, her arrow made a complete pass through on a 3x3 whitetail. I doubt your son will have any issues with that setup.
