What's up with the pinks - All males?
« on: August 14, 2011, 06:10:58 PM »
So Weathergirl and I went out today and got eight pinks for our limit off Eagle Point.  EVERY single one was a male.  The last two trips, each fish was a male as well.  Another guy I know got four last weekend, three males.  The first seven we got only two were females.

So, of 21 fish, only 3 have been hens.  This seems quite skewed to me.  Is there some issue with hen survival to return?  I have a zoology background but cannot explain this.

Anyone else noticed this?  We only released one really small fish so have not been just keeping the bigger ones or anything like that.

We have been getting a pretty even mix.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

It's just been my personal experience but with big runs it seems the bucks hit the river first followed by the hens.  :dunno: Say 70-30% then 30-70%.

Also, it's not uncommon to see higher numbers of bucks early in the season.  I caught 8 on the
Skagit last weekend.  All were bucks.  Not worried about it.  A larger number of hen's usually come after the first push of fish.

Been the opposite for us. We have brought in around 15 now and I think only around 3 were not hens.

Nice healthy brite pinks! way to go!   I 've noticed other years catching more bucks at first, figured they were more aggressive to biting when arriving  :dunno:

Weathergirl did a google search and came up with an answer.  The males come in first to establish a nest territory, from marinebio.net.

Inbox is available.   :)

Good job on the limits Lokidog, I'm still not catching limits down on Possession bar yet. Only a few here and there. I'm getting a mix of males and hens.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!

Out of the ten we caught off of PA, 3 were females a week ago.  I missed the last run but the one before out of PA most of the pinks were female. :dunno:
