This will be my second year archery elk huntin. But this is the first year im goin to attempt calling. I have a primos mac daddy bugle. But I've also been messing around with the diaphram calls. What's your guyses prefrences between the two? Any advantages/ disadvantages between the two?  Any possible tips hints or tricks for calling out in the field?

I like to use diaphragms for bugling and cow calling as well as external mouth calls for cow calling.

I feel that you get a more realistic bugle using a mouth diaphragm and by adding emotion in to it you can sound like many different bulls.  I have always been able to tell a Primos terminator bugle apart from a real elk or a diaphragm bugle (not to say that they don't work on real elk, because I have seen them work many times ).

Also whatever you are going to use practice, practice, practice.

I've been putting in lots of practice with the diaphrams. Every day to and from work. With the windows all the way down. I wish I got pictures of some of the peoples reactions this last week.

I laugh everytime I hear a primos elk bugle! There is no  mistaking one of those, and you bet the bulls know to. Everybody and there uncle uses one because they are so easy(I have found two of them in the woods). If it was me I would use a diaphragm call, sounds way more realistic and you get a larger diversity in sounds out of one call.

The key to a diaphram is to get one that fits your mouth.  You can also trim the edges to get the perfect fit as well.

In all reality, many external bugles can sound pretty good with lots of practice. But many who use them just take them out of the package on opening day and toot away.

  Your on the right track with a diaphragm reed. They are the most versatile call you can use and can sound authentic. If you're going to practice enough to be good, then there's no argument that you should keep it up with the reeds. Hands free is hard to beat when a big bull comes stomping into bow range.

I am in the same boat, gonna try bugling this year after many years of just cow calling.  Which diaphrams are the best, which are the easiest to learn.  Right now I just have a pack bugle that sounds ok at best.

Also what about the bugle tubes? With all the variety on the market which is best as far as size? Was considering making my own but don't know how to make it as effective as possible. Any suggestions?

If you get a chance to go to Rocky Jacobsons "Elk College", it is well worth it.  You must tell a story.... Bone has great advice call less and listen, it will tell you what you need.  I try to find a good spot, do some light cow/calf calls for about 2 minutes,  then a easy locater bugle.  If I get a responce... then its time to get the bull going. Depending on the responce.  Everytime I hear a primos bugle, I laugh and move to anoher area. Sounds like a guy on a flute.... I prefer diaghrams, and the Bugling bull external cow call, but use the diaghram calls for most everything except the extreme estrus calling.
