I would try to stop him first, but definitly a shooter. Never would take a shot at a briskly walking deer let alone at 40 yds.

No shot... what is behind the target? Not safe, PASS. Tough call but safety first.

Look at his back legs they are planted he may have his front leg lifted because he is either alerted, or getting ready to walk. As for passthrough with an arrow there I wouldnt be concerned with a rifle that would be a different story. Hard to make the call looking at a picture if he is indeed getting ready to walk, and stationary I would drop him.

To alert for that long of shot. Plus with not knowing what's over the hill it would be a pass for me.

I voted pass because that isn't the buck I'm after.
If it was the buck I wanted to shoot though, I would be at full draw and give him a bleat. As soon as he stopped it would be on it's way

Would go with the safety. The guy on the other side of the hill is going to shoot at the same time you do and both of you will get hit with the stray arrow.

I said I would shoot mostly based on the size of the buck, but I wouldn't shoot at a "briskly walking" target. Try to stop it or let it pass but I would certainly continue to give chase if he made it over the ridge!

Probably not. Whistle and stop him have an alert animal. Would not shot at an alert animal 40 yds away with a bow. Too much chance the animal will jump the string and have a wounded animal.

I'd get to full draw when possible and mouth grunt at him to stop him. As soon as he stopped I'd put the arrow on air mail! Rifle I'd pass for worry of a pass thru, with an arrow he doesn't get a pass if he's the buck I am after.

If I was able to stop him. Not briskly walking and not without knowing what's behind him.

I would love to shoot him, but the question states, "briskly walking" and for me, I dont shoot at anything that is briskly walking.

I would get to full draw and try to stop him, then aim a little low in expectation he will jump the string.

For Christ sake shoot! I spent all summer slamming arrows into a piece of recycled foam. I would be ready to stick something real. Yes take a shot you know you can make but you should have practiced all summer and be ready. A hunting buddy last year stuck his deer in less than 5 minutes. He lamented that he was so stoked he got his first deer with a bow but later thought it was a bit anticlamatic dropping one 5 minutes into the season. We went over to his father in laws house and went out the back gate into a large wooded area only to find a 3 does standing 20 yards away. Last year I had hunted for only 2 days and 20 min into shooting light my deer stepped right out at 30 yards quartering away. It was only a medium sized doe but I said "Hey the Lord gave me this great opprotunity and a perfect shot and I took it" It stumbled after only 5-6 steps and made only another 30 to 40 yards before piling up. I imagine most hunters have the same experience as me with most of my deer I have harvested I had just seconds to make up my mind about shooting.

Yep wait for him to stop. Could also be someone on the other side. but if i was the only one out there and knew it stop him. 40 yards and moving tough shot.

I would wait for a better shot, 40 yards i would feel good about the shot, if I knew what was behind the deer.

Well for one thing, there is not a back drop. I just don't shoot with out a good back ground.
