Deer area 1080

Hey my dad and I drew modern doe tags for the area around colfax. Anyone have any info or could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Get out and start talking to farmers and asking for permision.  I don't know how much public land is around there, if any.  But there is a lot of farmland.

We pheasant hunt up there, seems like 90% private. But like the person said above, start chatting with farmers

It's 100% private in that area.  I grew up in Colfax and there is no public land in/or around town.

That being said, you should have no problem getting permission to shoot a doe!

That's not entirely true. I just looked at a map and there's around 1200 acres of state land in that deer area, and most, if not all of it, looks like it is accessible by county or state roads. Plus there is 900 acres of Feel Free to Hunt.

I had that same tag last year long with the rest of my hunting party. The best thing i can tell you is dont pass up a full sized doe figuring it will be easy to get. As we discovered last year everyone that was drawn for that tag piled into the area figuring they could fill there buck and doe tags. Made all of the deer very skiddish. I have primarily hunted that area, and know where a good amount of feel free land is and scouted the deer heavily leading up to the season, it was still a struggle to fill our 4 tags for does.

There is a decent amount of feel free to hunt land in the area, youll just have to get out and find it. Sadly i know longer live  in pullman and cant scout the area daily to give you better direction to go.

For the record, you are probably looking at section 36 "school ground" correct?  That exists everywhere.   I'm guessing one section hits the road and one doesn't right?   FFTH is private.

Also in looking at the gomap feature on the wdfw where state land is in the area of 1080 I don't think I have ever seen any of it marked? Is that the case? How do you know if it is actually huntable? And not private?

School ground isn't marked.  It is only accessable if it hits a public road.   A good GPS (land ownership) will work, but you have to be REAL sure where you are at.

There is some DNR land in the north end of that deer unit. I wouldn't suggest hunting it though its just steep hill side with open field and a couple of small eye brows. You will have better luck on private land. If u just say ive got doe tags and ask to take a doe they will generally let you on.

I wouldn't worry about finding the public ground.   Just knock on some doors, let them know you have DOE tag, and you will be fine.

I don't understand your question?  Which "guy"?  If you mean where did I see the public land, look on the "GoHunt" map on the WDFW website. And I didn't say Feel Free to Hunt land was public, but it is huntable (obviously).

If the map says it is public land, then it is huntable. But of course, first you have to be able to access it. A lot of state land is "landlocked" by private land, so in that case you can't hunt it, unless you get permission to go across private property to get to it.

Buckman, If you truely do live on the Palouse, just start knocking on doors. Might want to wait 3 0r 4 weeks until harvest is over though. If you don't get permission, just sit on some FFTH all day and you will still fill your tag.

That's not true. It will almost for sure be leased out for farming/grazing, but the leasee cannot post it.
