bi-spotting scope set up
« on: August 17, 2011, 04:47:58 PM »
I was watching a tv hunting show the other day, and the guide had a pair of swarovski spotters mounted together. It looked legit the way he had it mounted, like they actually made a tripod adaptor for them. Always wondered if people did this. He looked like my 2 year old daughter looking through a pair of 15x56's.
Any of you guys ever done this or seen it? I bet it would work pretty well ( if you could afford a     $6-7000 setup.) I have an older leupold 20x60 gold ring spotting scope that I use strictly for lightweight packing. Its pretty lightweight and is an extra, so maybe I should try to pick up another one and put one of these rigs together. Hell, worse case I could go hillbilly style and mount my leupold next to an old nikon or something. :chuckle:

I've looked through one homemade setup.  I thought about doing it, but realized the 15x56's work slick, and the single spotter later to zoom in was a better opion for me.

I saw the Kowas down in AZ last year.  They use them to find Coues deer.

Although they make a mount, this was a homemade job.  Something like 15 pounds including both spotters, mount and tripod.  Not going to be carrying that setup far.

Yep, great for the road, but I'll take either a single spotting scope or invest in a pair of 15x56s.

Nice setup high country.  I wish I could afford that - I'd buy in a second, especially if I knew that I was going to AZ every year.

I just looked through 10x50 ELs a couple of weeks ago and I am seriously considering selling my 10x42 SLCs to get them, though.  Also, I need a spotter.  Too many glass needs and not enough $$.

Well I *am* going to be hunting AZ this year. Fortunately for me I already have all my glass needs covered between a pair of Nikon EDG 10x32s and an ED Fieldscope 82. :IBCOOL:

... Too many glass needs and not enough $$.

You can say that again. That's why I refuse to be 'that guy' with six hunting rifles in his glass cabinet and only two cheap scopes to share between them all. "Why do I need binoculars when I have glass mounted on my rifle?"  :bash: :bash: :bash:

Have you taped the objective covers onto your edg binos yet?  I have had mine fall off a few times.....that aside, they are pretty much THE standard imo.

I have heard of it being done several times, but if I was to put that kind of money into optics I would be buying a 40X pair of astronamy Binoculars. they run about $6,000. Several of the most successful hunters in the west secretly use them..

I only seem to have trouble when I open them. Not enough to ruin the asthetics in my mind just yet. I'm sure Nikon would send me a pair if I lost one. I wouldn't want to abuse their policy so I'd probably tape them on if it got to that point.

What other high end binos have you been able to extensively compare them to so far? I only bought 'em because I saw this pair on CL for $600  :IBCOOL:

I noticed in the Cabelas catalogue the new EDG spotting scope sells more than the Swarovski  :yike: They must really think their glass is the shizzle, now.

Guy I know uses the Kowas here in western WA for BT's. . . He'll sit and glass steep deep reprod all day and finally pick a nice buck out of it getting up for a midday snack.  I looked through them once, but they were something else! Someday. . .

I have had leica, swiss and swaro.....the edg is as good or better optics but the body sux. Those $600 binos sold for $2000
