I have never hunted elk. 150+ continues to elude me (except on trail cam, while scouting, just out of range, not presenting a good shot and a million other lame excuses). This is one of my largest (148 3/8 gross). I have another one that will gross the exact same (and taken off the same stand). This stand used to be a for sure thing for 140-150 bucks on any given year. The heaviest rut activity I have ever witnessed happened in this area yearly. This one was taken in 06' and there were three pope & young class bucks taken off what we call the "honey hole stand" that year..all 140 class bucks. The next year my wife killed her first 140 whitetail off that stand and I passed up several bucks that were in the 140's because I was after a 160 buck. In 08' they clearcut the land surrounding this property and things haven't been the same since.

I am not sure it was a spike blacktail when my new son-in-law was watching over my shoulder, or a 3x4 mulie that my oldest brother released on at the same instant...it could have been the button buck I killed when I was just 12 years old; my first big game ever that was never recoreded on camera because "He's just a yearling," I told my dad...or the whitetail doe thirty-five years later that took ten hours to recover...Those are among the "best" archery deer hunting feats I've experienced.

The bulls, however, have eluded me...[sigh]
I'd just like to remind everybody that it's about the hunting, not just the killing. In other words, it's about the total experience, the sport itself and the challenge involved. Bowhunting, done right, is a justifiable and honorable pursuit. Done for the wrong reasons, simply chalking up kills and seeking personal glory, it's taking away rather than giving back to a principled way of life that has to be experienced to be understood.
