She just wont stand for him
« on: August 22, 2011, 08:00:13 AM »
Hello all, first time posting on this board, I lurked around the forums for a while and decided it was time to break my silence.
My question is about My dads Brittney. Some background first he has a 7 year old Brittney female, that was trained by Doug Burnett, she is outstanding and loves to hunt. I have a 4 year old Brittney Male who was initially supposed to be trained and hunted but got hit by a car and lost one of his fore legs. He has been resigned to a pet that my family loves. My problem is this, Ginger (Dads Brit) Will not stand for him most of the time and when she does Gibbs (My Brit) seems to prefer...um working from the wrong end if you catch my drift. Does anyone have any pointers for us to help these 2 tie up. Our intentions are for 1 litter of pups and then to fix them both. Been trying for awhile now and getting frustrated. Thanks.

If you know she is in standing heat then you may have to hold her and guide him or you might have to use artificial insemination.  Be prepared for all the ways it can go wrong just in case, she could freak out and scream had a friend have that happen with a Jack Russel it scared the daylights out of her, this in turn can freak your male out leading to possibly getting bit in a really bad episode.  You may want to hormone test to be certain she is in standing heat otherwise you could cause undue stress not to mention waste your time.

and 7 years old from a breeding standpoint is often considered a senior dog in many breeding circles so this alone is gonna be a challenge.

Yes my dad and I discussed this year will most likely be our last attempt. Thanks, shes due in heat this fall so wish us luck. Also how long should you keep a male and female together before it becomes counter productive. Can you leave them together for long periods of time, or should they get short doses of being together when she is in heat?

Dogs are not my specialty I was much more involved in horse breeding and then sheep.  Most my dog breeder friends would limit the exposure to the 2 best days and then only breeding maybe 2-3 times. Its a bit different than it was with horses.  There are a couple others on here who breed dogs and they will hopefully come along and give you their advice.

I assume this will be the first litter for the female? At seven years and her first breeding, you will probably need to hold her and guide your male as someone suggested. I would also suggest consulting your vet as seven is getting up there for breeding a dog.

If she is not in full standing heat, it is not uncommon for a female to not stand. Some will be flat out nasty. I have had to muzzle some very sweet dogs in fear of them hurting my stud. If she is in full standing heat and he cant find it or line up. Then try to help him. If he can't get it, then you can ai her for a litter.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I should have become active on this forum a long time ago.
