300 YRD SHOT !!!
« on: August 22, 2011, 07:20:52 PM »
Just curious how you would handle a 300 shot .... would you hold in the same spot on a 300 yrd shot when shooting on flat ground compared to a down hill or up hill shot....

any day of the week  :chuckle: also as to where you would hold would depend on the grade of the slope your shooting down since most common calibers arcs are dropping pretty good by 300...

What kinda rifle and caliber?  I'm no gun expert but I do know you subtract yardage on up and down hill shots.

Id check the cosine and account for it..
But realistically unless it was a crazy angle I could just shoot it for a straight up 300 and be fine :twocents:

And also what angle of the shot.  It will hit higher than at zero angle, so need to know approximately where to hold.

what I am getting at is when shooting down hill or up hill never hold over ...with my .270 I hold dead on at 300 shooting down hill or up hill but if I was shooting at something on flat land I would hold on its back ...some guys think because something is 300 to 400 yrds away shooting down hill they need to hold over an animal ...most likely if you do that you will shoot over the top of him ....a flat shot is way more difficult to make at long range than a down hill or up hill shot ...

If you were zerod at 300, you would hold low shooting up or down..

My Grandad always said "if you are unsure of the distance, always hold hair". This advise has served me well. ( I don't own a range finder)

I'm a good shot out to 600 yards. 300 yards up, down or flat? I'm going to really have to put my head into it. I just don't want to shoot. I want a nice clean kill.
times before with just leather, wool and cotton.

I zero my rifles at 250. There is only 3 inches drop to 300. I would hold midway up the body.

yeah exactely ...but never hold off the kill spot ....you can make longer shots at up hill and down hill ranges without holding over ...Some people do not understand that so thats why I posted this .. That guy i took from Spokane a few years ago missed 3 bear in 4 days of hunting and the first one was at 300 + with a 7mm mag and he shot and the bear just stood there ...I told him you shot over it ..he says what ? I said you shot over it ...he says but it was 300 + plus and I ask him where did you aim he says 2 inches over his back ...he had no idea about shooting down hill ...so i put a milk jug full of water at 300 down hill and i told him to hold dead on ..center of jug.... he shots and it blows up ...he is like what the heck ..so after that I put one at 300 on flat land and told him to hold dead on again and bang he shots about 6 to 10 inches low ...and after all of that he goes on to miss 2 more bear  :dunno: I think he was excited :chuckle: :chuckle:
