I have a cheat sheet I keep in my pack for various different yards and degree of slope.  I have used that cheat sheet on more than one occasion.  I'm zero'd at 300 also.

Really need to know the cartridge/gun for some of the long stuff.  Another factor often overlooked is how high the scope is mounted above the barrel, assuming that is your zero point is not 300 yards.  Just creates a whole nother angle to deal with.

I guess we need to seperate the compensators from the common mans hunting scope ....Totally two different things ....besides I would not us a compensator on a scope until I was going to make a long shot like over 500 yrds or longer ....270 / 30-06/ 7mm / and a 300 does not drop enough to totally hold over an animal at 300 yrds.. if your zeroed in at 100 yrds and you hold high lung or on top of its back you will hit it in the kill zone as long as you squeeze the trigger ...of course everything needs to be done right ...

I am honestly not prepared for a long shot for a kill at 300 yards. My frame of mind is to get in close where I can almost spit on the critter. 100 yards max is what I expect. 200 yards I still got it. I've seen more deer and elk with in 30 yards than 300 yards. I really think I would pass that shot up.

My Grandad always said "if you are unsure of the distance, always hold hair". This advise has served me well. ( I don't own a range finder)

depends on what your sighted in at and what gun with my 7mm im shooting 2 inches high at 100yds and i would hold right on and im 100% sure i would hit

All my rifles are dead on at 300-350 yards.... That way I never have a holdover for the unknown..... If I can tell it's legal within 300-400 or so yards I hold dead on...... If you're shooting at an extreme angle up of down hill I always aim a few inches lower then normal.... I've never shot over a deer or elks back with my set ups..... Only a few yotes........

So if it is a 300yrd shot, I would hold dead on.  Now if I was zeroed at 100yrds and was trying to make a 300 yard shot with no scope adjustment, I would have to hold about 11.5" high.  This is all according to the ballistic charts and what I've seen at the range.

yes... which is basically at the top of a deers back.....I have a 300 WSM and I have killed a couple bear at 300 with it ... I zero it in at 2 in. high at 100 and I use 180 gr. hornaday and it up ends them...most of the bear I have killed have been down hill....

I know I’m a good shot. I’ve shot competitively against the USMC rifle team. They finished 1234 hats off to them. I beat one marine who was wanting to join that rifle team. I finished really high in the standings.

Friends want me to site in their scopes. I’ve dropped things in a heart beat that amazed those hunting with me.

But that is all a whole lot of use to be’s. Years of single parenthood, three good years of chronic back pain have made me into that old use to be.

So I’m out of practice. The local rifle range I have is about all I have to go and shoot at. It is only a 200 yard range. When I was that young use to be I spent every moment I could shooting my bow or my rifle. Developing that instinctive shooting skill at all ranges and terrains. And nowadays I’m just rusty.

There is a gated roads thread here. I’m not a hiker anymore but I would like to go out and shoot at 600 yards again. And now my only challenge is a plinker I got for the 200 yard public range with open sites.

All of that is neither here nor there. The thing that matters to me the most about a good shot is that animal. I like to eat the heart so I don’t want to shoot that. Gut shots are just plain a waist of a lot of meat. I want a clean kill to the neck and I will pass up a hail marry type of shot.

I am sure there are those here that can make that 300 yard shot. This thread just made me feel old. Thanks a lot.

I don't entirely agree with Sierra's first statement.  It should read "will always shoot higher than it would on the level", not "high".  If someone is shooting slightly uphill or downhill at 400 yards, and he aims low on the animal because "the gun will always shoot high", I suspect he's going to miss.

I see that "always shoot high" statement quite often, and I think it does a disservice to those trying to understand this.

Just curious how you would handle a 300 shot .... would you hold in the same spot on a 300 yrd shot when shooting on flat ground compared to a down hill or up hill shot....

I hunt the wheat fields of eastern Washington and my rifle is already zeroed at 200yards. A 300 yard shot is not that much farther than my zero. As for the question of up hill and down hill that is easy. When shooting on a flat plain, gravity effects the arch of the bullet. Any caliber. When shooting up hill or down hill gravity does not effect the bullet as much. Therefore you aim low in both cases.
