West End Rosie Scouting
« on: August 17, 2011, 11:12:40 AM »
Hey everyone. Last year I posted a thread about elk hunting out on the West End of the OlyPen, but received limited input. I'm out of Port Angeles and just looking for some suggestions on what roads or units to really put some serious scout time in this weekend. I spent a ton of time searching the Sol Duc last year, but with limited results. Found a significant amount of sign on the Elk Ridge side of the unit, but it was fairly overgrown in many areas. The Cooper Ranch Road side was another area I checked along with FS Rd 2918, but I had trouble finding sign, and it got rugged in certain areas. I do know that some masher bulls have been taken in the Sol Duc, but I have yet to even find their stomping grounds.  The most success I had in finding elk was out on the Hoko Ozette Road in the Dickey Unit on some old roads my dad and I used to deer hunt years ago. My buddy and I found a ton of a sign but it was overgrown. On our way out, we ran into a fat cow and had her charging towards us after we let out a bugle. The next day, we ran into a couple cows and a brush rack 3-pt. Obviously it would be nice to find a nicer bull, but at this point, I'm hoping for anything. That spot, by the way, was devoid of any elk by the time the muzzleloader season opened in October.

It would be great to get some suggestions on a few roads or gated areas to scout out there this weekend. I've been elk hunting for 4 or 5 years now, most of those being in the Willapas, but I'm trying to stay more local these days. Much appreciated! Good luck and happy hunting to the archers here in a couple weeks.

I drew the rifle tag last year, 1 tag Sept. 20th to the 24th. Not much info on this site just a little. Go down to Browns and get topo's of the area. I live in in PA give me a PM, if you want to go out West I will go out with you. I did a lot of scouting last year. I don't have anybody to hunt with so maybe we could hook up. :dunno:

I live in Silverdale and am also interested in finding out some info about this. Maybe we can all hook up for a hunt?

I tried the Dickey last year for the first time. I need help, too. I was into 'em several times, but no branch-antler bulls were amongst them.

Well I checked out one of my spots up the Hoko-Ozette Road this weekend. Didn't see any elk but that was probably because it's been warm out. Lots of sign for sure, so that's always encouraging. Saw 5 deer, 4 rabbits, and a bunch of doves. I also saw a small cougar the night before crossing the road. That was a first for me. 16 miles of biking and hiking in this heat certainly had me ready for a beer by the end of the day though!

You know I don't hunt this area but like to read other threads and see what's happen out there, and because of the last post, this is why I like Hunt Wa. Everyone is very willing to help when needed! Great job guys for hooking up fellow hunters!!
