switched to east
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:11:21 AM »
First year huntin eastside archery elk.  Iv'e gone to packwood two years before this.  I'm willing to put the time in.  I'm going out for two weeks.  I was gonna start in naches. Only been up there one time for the rifle season *censored* show. No time to scout this year.  Can anyone on here point me in the right direction??? I've got goggle earth and am grabbing a topo today. Any tips on were to start would be sweet.  It takes years to learn the land so I figured why not ask.

Thanks, Bob

Doesn't sound like much of a DIY hunt. :chuckle: I laugh at everyone who "dosent have time" to scout. I've been keeping track of my elk since may, do I have a whole lot of spare time? No. But I make it happen. :twocents:

Why are you switching from the Packwood.  I thought that GMU was pretty good for elk?

Thanks for the tips I think I did go up Ravensroost when I was there three years ago for a day.  It's all DIY.  Asking and getting info doesnt DO anything.  I still got alot to do after im told ravens roost or any other area mentioned.  I'm from the hood canal and a naches trip would cost me 200+ to scout for a cow or a spike kinda spendy. Don't get me wrong im not cheap at all when it comes to my hunting.  I scouted two years in a row at packwood.  But i lived in tacoma then and it cost me about 100 to get there and back.    i have as much gear as i can afford and i hunt as hard as possible.  I'll get into elk this year and kill one of them buggers wether you guys give me info or not.  I cant wait for the first it's on and if it's brown its down.

You don't have to have an eastside permit to build points for the eastside. Don't tell anyone else I said that though, OK?
Points are points, east or west doesn't matter.

I don't mean to come off like a jerk but I probably will anyway...

It's tough getting good info from a bunch of guys who have spent thousands of $$ in gas and countless hours of time scouting and learning areas....especially when you tell them you don't have any time to scout and don't want to spend any money.

I'd go to Ravens Roost and start looking around. Even the rifle hunter *censored* show guys put their time in learning that country.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

lol might as well, you wont even have to shoot one, just wait for everyone to flock shoot a herd of elk and race to tag an elk like everyone else up there

Just head over and put in some boot work.  The naches is a good unit, just look at the reports.  Pick some spots on google maps that look good, water sources etc then scout them out.  You can cover a lot of land in one weekend of scouting.  Keep working at it and each year you will find more and more honey holes.  Don't expect to bag one this season although you easily could.  Sometimes its best to not have a clue of what to expect.

Read up online, search around.

I don't hunt this unit.  But know people who have.

I just love the 2 weeks to go 'til it's time to go, I haven't spent an ounce of energy towards so much as even a weak attempt at having a successful hunting experience, I don't have time to it either, but where should I go posts. :chuckle:
