My first black bear
« on: August 25, 2011, 08:49:48 AM »
Well OK, it's technically not my first bear that I've killed but it is the first archery bear!
I have to say it was quite a rush being that close to a bear and only having a stick for protection.
I had seen some bear sign on this overgrown logging road as it had lots of blackberries on it so I set up one evening in a decent shooting lane to wait. I think I was half asleep when this bear just stepped around a corner in the road. I could see it wasn't the biggest bear in the world but still it didn't look that small either. Especially when it was only 19 yards away. One well placed Muzzy and the bear died within sight 30 yards away. I was way happy about being able to see it die as I've had to go into some thick stuff on a couple I've shot.

Way to go!   Congrats!
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Nice looking bear... I had one at 35 yards last year while hunting on foot... There was too many branches between him and I for an arrow to make it through; I didn't want to risk wounding him with a bad shot and/or pissing him off to come at me...

Thanks for all the nice replies! It was an exciting time I soon wont forget. I've shot several out of tree stands with rifles long ago when baiting was allowed and that wasn't anything close to the rush of this kill!
I was pleased with the pics my self as I took them using the self timer with the camera propped up on my backpack.

MS,
I do have a very understanding wife! We started dating in high school and have been married now for 17 years. We raise, train and race quarter horses (star B is our brand), so our family fun time is me travailing along to supporting her and our daughter almost every weekend while they chase barrels. It does keep me/us very busy.  I understand her passion and she understands mine.
