Vortex vs Minox
« on: June 13, 2008, 01:42:02 PM »
I am looking to buy new binos and I think I have it narrowed down to the Vortex Razor 10x42 or Viper 10x42 or the Minox HG 10x43 or BL 10x42.  Has anyone been able to campare any of these?  Minox vs Vortex?  Is the extra money worth it to jump up from the Viper to the Razor or from the BL to the HG?  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I have looked through all those but never compared them side by side.  For the money the Vipers are IMO the best value around in a binos.  You are certainly not going to go wrong w/ any of them.  It's hard to say if it's worth it to jump from 1 to the other.  I personally feel that a hunter should spend as much as possible on binos.  In fine optics you do generally get what you pay for.  Some of it will come down to personal preferences as well as your individual eyes.  Don't over look the comfort aspect either... which ones feel the best in your hands and up to your eyes.  Once you eclipse that 8-900 threshold there are a lot of good binos.  Kahle's is another you may wanna check out.  Of the ones you listed I'd generally rate em this way...  :twocents:
1. HG (best quality)
2. Viper (pure value)
3. Razor (if you're spendin this much go w/ the HG)
4. BL

I haven't had a chance to check out the vortex binos yet, but I did look through the HG's and I thought they were fantastic.  Right now you can get (if you hustle as these were in limited supply) 10x43 Minox HG that were samples at the NRA show, which come with the full lifetime warranty, for $629.99.  That is A LOT of glass for the money!

I have the Viper 10x42.  Great binocs for $400.  I didn't compare them to the ones you mentioned.  The only issue I have with them is the eye cups move when you don't want them to, so I constantly have to adjust them.  Not sure if I can change them out or not...

I owned a pair of Razors in 10X and couldn't get comfortable behind them.  Not bad glass or construction, just not what I was expecting....sent them back for refund.
I played with Minox HG's for a good 20 min at a shop that had a resolution chart hanging about 50 yards away.....very impressive glass and ergonomics.  very elegant appearance, almost too pretty.
I owned Kahles 8X32 and 8X42 and sold them when I got my Nikon Premier LX's.
Just a better fit and the widest field of view I've ever used.
I love them.
A very subjective review.

IMO best bang for the buck is Nikon Monarch

Like Mountainwalk I'm sold on my EL's but would have to agree with you on the Nikons, very good product for the price.
