Winchester 70 in 300 WSM

Good for any game in N America.

Other than maybe a feeding problem with the short action, I don't see why it wouldn't be a great all around gun for about anything if loaded accordingly.

I like them, but I've never owned one. I had my Father in law's for a while so that I could wor up a load for it. His chamber, and aparently a fair number of other peoples', was cut egg shaped. if you only shot factory ammo, you may not notice. All I had to do was take .005" off the top of my shell holder so I could size the brass down a little more. 

It still shot pretty pretty well. I believe I was able to get the 168 TTSX (maybe it was 165) to shoot under an inch. He sold the rifle though because of the chamber.

Brother has a BAR and my nephew has an A bolt.  Both are great shooters.  Nephew knocked a bull elk flat with his at 400 yds. 

Both have been very very accurate.  Usually 1/2 - 11/16 of on inch groups at 100 yds. with handloads.

Win70..  The question really is Push feed or Control feed?  The separate question is about the cartridge.  Nuttin wrong with 300wsm, but the push feed might have issue with that fatter/short cartridge.

 :)I am a big fan of the 300 WM so the 300WSM is a close second Personally I'd go 300WM
been shooting one since about 72 that is 1972, killed alota animals at all sorta conditions. of course the bottom line is hit "the hole". My 300 is custom built, but my 270 wsm is a winchester featherweight, blue and walnut, its nice but it aint a 300.

I've got a 300 T/C Encore, but was thinking of a 300WSM bolt action. We have a ton of open long range shooting areas over here. I've got short range big bore brush type guns. I'm just thinking what's next....hmmmmmmmmmmm ?

Here is mine... I love it ... shot 2 bear with it and I plan on puttin it to work tomorrow ....at least I hope so ... i have it shootin 1 1/2 high @ 100 using 180 gr hornaday bullet ...2 shots 2 kills topped with a 4x12 Bushnell  which some will laugh at the bushnell but 32 yrs of hunting never ever had any trouble with a bushnell ...back east I hunted in below 0 weather as a kid and it has always performed flawless .... So that means it works for me

That would depend on which Bushnell you're talking about. They have good ones and bad ones. I won't laugh if it's a 3200 or 4200. If it's something else, well...

That would depend on which Bushnell you're talking about. They have good ones and bad ones. I won't laugh if it's a 3200 or 4200. If it's something else, well...

The 300wsm is well suited for any north American game and many others.

I do not like some of the feeding issues with the new model 70's. I have a older 30-06 m70 and its one of the sweetest guns I have ever owned.

I don't have a problem with a belted mag (300wm), where the headspace is on the belt. Or a non-belted WSM where the headspace is on the shoulder. I prefer the belted brass as a properly sized/fireformed belted case will headspace properly with also case shoulder taking up some energy. (I only neck size my belted mag cases). The WSM ammo/brass is more expensive, but the WM is on a long action adding a bit of weight to the reciever and more throw to the bolt. Both can be extremely accurate. Older WM's used can be had relatively cheap by new gun price/standards. The WSM is the latest and near greatest until you start getting into some of the wildcats or STW/STA's. (Shooting Times Western or Shooting Times Alaskan cartridges) I do prefer the pre-64 Win70's with push feed and better triggers of yester-year. I think the bluing of the older guns is deeper in appearance. Most of the newer models are available in SS.  I prefer the older actions/barrels that have iron sights along with scope mounts. (try to find a set of irons on a new rifle now'a days!)

Pro's and con's for just about every era/model of rifle and pro's and con's for many of the magnum cartridges. It comes down to the Ford/Chevy/Dodge preference.

never had no trouble with mine ...shot about 100 rounds threw it ... bolt slids like butter and the trigger is around 2 1/2 lbs ....like I said I love it ...and both those bears I shot were over 200 and definately put the hurt to them ....It is hard leaving home without my trusty .270 it loves spankin some bear

I have a pre FN M70 featherweight in 300wsm. I am partial to the featherweight M70's...got a few.
I have yet to score with this gun...hopefully in a couple months!
It's a great shooter...not going to get into any ballistics debate but I think it's a great caliber.
The trigger is great...had it lightened.
Action is soooo smooth! love it

You know... Not as elequently put as I might say it.. But not totally untrue. Other than a hundred feet per second here and there per bullet weight.. I'll have to admit there are some advantages of the wsm in .30cal without the belted case. But, I'll agree that the WSM's are spendy to shoot and that the call for a long time proven cartridge outweighs the newbie on the block...

I do like the 270wsm, (although I'm not sure there's anything it can do that the 7mag can't), but I'm not totally sold on the rest of them. Marketing to gain interest and boost rifle sales.

Yeah I think the A bolt is too light to get in a 300 magnum. That's why my A bolt is a 270 Win.

Look up your pet loads for 300wm and for 300wsm with relative same weight rifles and same weight bullets.  Felt recoil is relevant to a lot of factors. (Including the recoil pad involved/shape of the rifle stock)

If you're man (or woman) enough to shoot a 300wm, you should be able to handle a 300wsm.

300 Win Mag and 300 WSM recoil is virtually the same. If you want less recoil with a 300 Mag, use a 150 grain Barnes tsx.

My dad has an A-bolt in .270WSM and it shoots accurately but just beats the living crap out of you to shoot it.  Way more than a .270WSM should.  I think it's probably poor stock design.  Aftermarket might fix that a bit.

I have a Tikka .300WSM and the recoil doesn't hurt.  However, it jumps really bad and I've scoped myself with it (given, I was shooting at a deer without optimal body positioning/proper stance just because of the quickness of the shot, terrain, etc.  Got the deer though.)  I stuck a muzzle brake on it and problem has been solved but it's loud.

If recoil is a problem, get a Limbsaver or Kickeze recoil pad. Either one will make a world of difference. Had a Winchester m70 Featherweight in 270wsm and it kicked like a mule. The Limbsaver pad made a world of difference.

  My 300 WSM kicks like a freakin horse too!! but it shoots good .... I bought it for bear only but my .270 will still do whatever that 300 will do guarantee ya that

I have a very good gun technician, new word for you guys. If there is a feeding problem, he can fix it. He does all my gun work for me.
