dog wont fetch
« on: August 29, 2011, 05:14:22 PM »
i have a 2 year old black lab and i want to train her to find sheds so i thought ill start off with fetch(she already knows sit an lay down) but for some reason she never wanted to fetch? i got a few treats an a old sock tied a not in it and went out back, shook it around and got all excited(to get her interested) threw it about 15 feet and said fetch. she ran over to it didnt pick it up and came back, so i completely ignored her an after about 10 seconds of sitting at my back she went an pick it up and ran off with it then came back an chewed on it a few feet away so i said bring it here an she walked over to me i grabed it an she let it go then i gave her a treat an praised her i did that a few times but its really not what i want to see. i want to be able to tell her to fetch and her to get it right away and bring it back. is there any thing else i can do? or change what im doing?  :dunno: thanks

try a long line, take a 10 or 12 foot piece of cotten rope and clip it to her collar, make the dog sit ant your side throw what ever out for the dog to retrieve ( not farther than the rope) and gently " reel it back to you and reward the heck out of the dog, works with getting them to " come" also, has worked for me and I've had everything from hounds to bird dogs to " entertainment only" dogs, good luck!

Just go buy a finished dog from Roger Sigler for 6,000 dollars. Lol
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.
