D loop/string loop busted
«
on:
August 29, 2011, 08:18:29 PM »
well a rookie question, the upper half of my string loop busted on me. something i have always been paranoid of and i have hardly shot the thing. funny thing is, while researching this i found a thread on this topic, that appearantly i participated in speaking of my fear of this, lol. XXX Archery had a great step by step on installing a loop, but i'm a tard and dont trust myself. i'm going to try and salvage the top knot but fear i will fail... so long story short......i'm in kent, where can i take my bow near here. i bought it at cabelas, i'm thinking i dont want to take it to wholesale sports.

Take it to Dennis at Wholesale Sports in Federal Way. He works Wednesday and Thursday evenings. He'll fix it and you won't look back.

Unless you are 100% confident, let the pros do it. It's a very important part of your setup and you don't want it to fail. It can let that trophy get away and even be dangerous.

Mine busted a week ago at half draw, hurt like hell when my hand and release smacked my throat. On top of that I lost an arrow. It should only take a pro 5 min or so to replace it and for me usually runs $7 or so.

And when it breaks or falls apart in the wilderness while you are hunting, just hike out and have the pro's fix it again...might want to learn how to tie on a D-Loop and carry some extra cord on your hunting trip. Lots of youtube videos on how to do it.

I say go get the d loop material and go on youtube and install it yourself, i did and its so easy a cave man can do it. That way you know how to do it later on in the field

If you haven't fixed it already, i work in Tukwila and would be willing to show you how to do it, like stated before, super easy and definitely worth knowing how to do especially if your out hunting.
let me know bud.

THANKS Guys, its agreed my fault i don't know how. i'm paranoid right now of me doing it this first time as the season is here, and i got that thing shooting real nice, sights are perfect, worried about losing my zero. i'm embarrased asking a simple question like this and i do deserve to be shamed for not learning, as this is the weakest link most likely that i would encounter in the field. i'm gonna learn it by all means necessary, got an old browning bow to test it on. but i'm gonna still take it to somebody. i forgot about Dennis, i may give him a try. i'm tempted to go back to cabelas, as i need to find a montana elk butt anyways, and after all, they tied it. lol.
Thanks all.

Make a point of watching closely if you have someone else do it for you. Repairs like that ( as well as many others ), do not require a trip to the shop.
Get yourself a stick of 1/4 inch dowell, use part of it to tie on a d-loop ( use a foot of 1/4 inch rope ), so you never forget how....and another part of it to serve ....I also did the same thing with the prusick knot. When guys ask how to do these tasks, you can hand it to them to see it easily.
The more you learn to do for yourself, the lesser the chance of getting bitten in the ass at a bad time.

Needed something at cabelas and took the bow in, one look at the help center reminded me of why i didnt like the place, bought some loop string, youtubed and even tied with rope on a dowel as recommended and i now have a nice new loop that i did myself and as such i actually feel better as it was done the way i want it. i am still a tard, but i'm a tard that can tie a dloop. thanks all, so easy i am now even more embarrassed for asking.

Is serving hard? I nvr did it but im thinking tomorrow stoppin by the archery shop and getting the materials for it just incase. How would you tie on the begining wth out feeding it through the bow string?

Bunch of youtube videos on how to serve. It's pretty easy. I bought the Bohning serving kit at Cabelas. Note to all you Mathews Z7 owners...the kit comes with the string separater...but it runs into the roller guide and is pretty much useless. I cut a couple of 3/4 inch diameter pegs about 5 inches long and notched the ends with a jigsaw and smoothed the edges to hold your strings apart. Worked great. The kit came with a string spreader, that I did not have to put my bow in a press to separate the string to start the serving.

Could you fold the serving and wrap the tail up and back down on the outside of the string? Sorry for this being off topic

You can, but it is really easy to split your string and just slide it in there. Makes it easier, you don't have to old the sting.
