Three nice Merriam's we got this year.  The snow helped up out.

Took my bow and wife took shotgun for several nice walks.  Only got close twice, once for my wife, but he would not close the gap, and once for me at 45 yards with the bow, so I passed.

Just east of Sacramento. It's my new Spring break destination! I think it's a Merriam's.  :dunno:

Tmike,

CA was my first guess judging by the terrain.  Was your hunting parter with you?  Great experience for the kids!

Ours were Merriams as well but there must be some Rios mixing in as the tips of the fan have a lot of buff in them.

Ours came in gobbling and strutting the whole way.  He had another Tom with him but my partner was behind a tree and not able to get a shot. That's hunting.

Again nice bird.

This is my bird from last spring.  9 1/2" beard and 1 1/4" spurs.  Took him the day before closing day.

Yup, first morning out, third day of the season. Saw birds walking down a dirt road less than 1/4 mile away. it was very early in the morning. we called and called but they kept trying to head us off. finally we sat on top of a ridge and on the other side of the ridge, behind a fence, they started to walk by. One stopped and stuck his head up just long enough. the rest is history. Probably 2 hours of hunting total. That's me on the right.
