Whats some of your favorite backcountry food?
« on: August 31, 2011, 06:23:34 AM »
Beside mountain house meals... what do you guys like to backpack in with? I like to bring cliff bars, jerky, granola, emergen C and toasted wheat bread with pb and honey and crispy bacon..lotta calories in that little sandwhich.

Good question. That sandwich sounds gross but I've heard guys talk about it, I'm heading in the high country next week and was wondering does it need to be cold?  Do you make the sandwich before you head out and how long does it last in your pack not refrigerated? I usually just make a bunch of pb and jelly sandwiches and throw them in my pack, I've never had any problem with them lasting 2 to 3 days.

Ritz peanut butter crackers, pop-tarts, pepperoni sticks, trail mix, snickers, and I always try to make some room for at least an apple or two.  The apples aren't the greatest considering their weight, but they sure are nice on the top of the mountain.

Bagels aren't a bad choice. Justins Nut Butter comes in a few different flavors and in a convenient pouch for spreading. Top Ramen is easy to prepare and does taste a little better than most MH meals too. Leftover pizza will keep for a day or two, depending on the heat and I always take a really good sandwich in for lunch/dinner/snack on the first day. Might as well get at least one last good meal in!

Justins Nut Butter

I'm not sure I'd be eating anything called Justins Nut Butter. :yike:

:chuckle:     Justin can just keep that to himself.

Homemade trail mix:  Raw, unsalted sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, raisins, dried blueberries.

Bagels, individual packed cheese (string cheese or those cheddar cheese pieces), sometimes hard salami but I eat it the first day or so

Cous cous in a gallon freezer bag.  Add a package of chicken.  Can be two meals unless you're really hungry.

Oatmeal in a morning, put a couple packages in a quart freezerbag to carry up there so you don't dirty a pot

PB&J sandwiches

Cliff Bars, Kind Bars, etc.

Jerky

Sometime just some hard candy, like butterscotch, just to keep occupied while I walk around.  Don't eat much of it because it's pure sugar and crappy for you.

I also eat Shot Blocks and things like that if it's really hot.  NUUN tabs for water (but not in a bladder just if I have a bottle.)

I carry an energy bar and a sandwitch in the morning.  I have tried the peanut butter, bacon, and something else that Camron Hains discussed in his book.  It will be fine for three days if you are bivy hunting.

My main camp that resides where I park my truck I will bring a single burner gas stove.  If I can not cook it in one frying pan or a single pot it does not go.  I am not there to cook and clean.  I am there to hunt so my goal is a quick meal and go to bed.  THere are only three things to do when archery hunting.  1.  Hunting, 2.  Eating, 3. Sleeping.

A loaf of bread, doz eggs, bacon, oat meal, Peanut butter, Jam, can's of soup, some sliced cheese, energy bars, powdered energy drink additive for water.   That pretty much takes care of it for 10 days.

Powered energy drink- that's a good idea. I love this thread, full of good ideas and right before a lot of us are heading out in the country for elk!! I also eat oatmeal in the morning it's pretty filling, I will be sick of it by the end of the season though. I also like the idea of bringing a good meal for the first day, your right on with that. I know 3 or 4 days into a hunt I'm dying for a steak and green beans, not sure what it is but it just resets my clock.

Made some of the PB& bacon sandwiches at home, with honey too and liked em.  Very tasty.  Toasting the bread helps them last longer and not get too torn up.  Took a bunch out (forgot the honey packets to add in the field) and they were fine.  Flattened a bit and seemed a bit drier than at home, but still were very tasty and satisfying, especially with some Ramen soup.  This time, I'm toasting the bread at home and putting into a ziplock bag, then frying up the bacon at home and putting that in a seperate ziplock.  Bringing a tub of creamed honey and will make them out in the field.  The spreadable, creamed honey should be a great touch.  Heard about them forever too and decided to try 'em finally.  Like them a lot.

Now I know why in the backpacking threads you see 75 pound packs. I am all about purpose out there almonds, dried berries, some instant coffee, different kinds of  jerky, weight gainer protien (tons of carbs and protien) a few propel water flavor singles keep up the electrolites and emergen-c packs to keep from getting sick they are amazing warm! A few mre's and a bunch of oat meal I premix it with rasins and powdered maple syrup really hits the spot. If I get lucky a fresh rabit by camp!

I know it is kind of boring but my favorite thing to take in my day pack is Payday candy bars.  They are like the perfect amount of salt sugar and peanuts.   :dunno:

I never ever build a camp fire while archery hunting in September.  I do not need the extra stink.  I am looking forward to the years hunting season.  Last, year was the first year in three years that I found someone hunting the same area.  I hope they do not invite any more friends with them.

If I get lucky a fresh rabit by camp!

Popped a rabbit 2 years ago with a blunt. Marinated it for 24 hours in a zippy and submerged it in a cold stream. That was some good eating. Bring your blunts for grouse and rabbits!

What do you guys think about the fire smoke?  I've always thought it wouldn't hurt nothing, because it's a natural smell and I kinda thought it might help mask you stink a little. Any thoughts, sorry not trying to jack the thread.

This was brought up not to long ago. Some said that deer are attracted to it and they will try to stomp it out.  Bear go away from it though

Elk jerky, kippers, instant oatmeal, noodles, Yo On The Go and dried Papaya.

If water is in short supply I carry a lot of Ricola.  Put between cheek and gums like tobacco. It lasts for an hour or better. Keeps the throat wet and helps reduce water intake.

For the protein powder, you can premeasure some powdered milk to go with.  I suggest adding a little sugar to it as the powdered milk seems to be an acquired taste.  For deep backcountry where weight/distance are issues I like to carry ramen noodles.  They are easily prepared in water that is barely warm, so you can get long life from a fuel canister.  If you try beans/rice/other pastas it takes a bit of boiling to get them ready to eat and uses up fuel.  Other than that, lots of bars.  My favorite right now being the Snickers Marathon bars--280 cal with 21 g of protein.

I'm right there with you on that one!  I've been adding sugar to powdered milk for quite some time.  Only way I can stomach the stuff.  With the sugar I get used to it right away.  Plus, I don't have to add suger to my grapenuts (only cereal that doesn't get destroyed in my pack).
