Used pistols
« on: August 31, 2011, 08:04:02 PM »
My father in law passed away this last week and I need to sell his pistols.  I don't need top dollar as much as I probably need a reasonably easy option.  I was hoping to not drive around to too many places.  I know Cabelas buys used guns but maybe not for a great price.  I've seen a couple websites.  Does anyone have any good suggestions?  Thanks for your help. :dunno:

You might have already considered it, but try the classifieds here.  No cost to post or sell, and you could stipulate that the buyer comes and get them.  Depending on what you've got and where you're located, might be easy to sell them.

Cabelas will grade the gun to determine it's retail value using a "bluebook", they will then give you 70% of retail. I'd opt for the classifieds if it were me, but if you really need to move them Cabelas is an option. For what it's worth I've sold them two guns and they did not try to under grade them.

I am sorry for your loss.  Before you sell the handguns, make sure that family members have their input as to whether they would like one....I know my grandfather's rifles all went to people who treasured them more than a new owner (stranger) would....

If you do sell, here is the place to start.

I think Ross has a very good point. Talk with family and see if any one item has some importance. Also, maybe you have a good quality gun shop. You could take the whole lot in and go on cosignment.

Gobble Doc,

First  let me say that I am sorry to hear about your father in law, I just lost a member of my family last evening. It is a hard thing to go through.

Last year I lost a hunting partner and his widow asked me to dispose of his guns. I did the same as you and came here for advice. One member suggested that I buy  the Thirty First Edition Blue Book  of Gun Values. I did that and it was a tremendous help in pricing the guns. I then put them in the classifieds here on this site and sold everyone of them for the asking price. No one tried chiseling me down and they all were good people. I can not say enough about how smooth it went. If you don't want to buy that book, I still have it and if you PM me I will look up values for you.

My condolences to you and your family and best of luck on this project.

Joe

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.  I like the idea of the classifieds here to start with.  Everyone on this site has been so helpful to me in the past.  It will take me a little time to organize things here.

:yeah:   :yeah: My dad sold my great uncles original WWI Model 1911.  He was a Lt. Colonel in the army and a West Point Grad that got mustard gassed.  Real hero. I had coveted that gun for years.  Still makes me sick to think about it.
