What temp is too cold to hunt a midday wallow?
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:09:56 PM »
As the title says.  At what temp do elk stop or slow way down on using wallows?  My plan this year is to open the day on a hot clearcut from last year, move to a well used wallow for midday, and close the day back on that clearcut.  But, if the midday temp is too low, I'd assume the elk wouldn't be as eager to hit the wallow.  Thoughts?

I don't think you need to worry from seeing the longe-range forecast for next week.  Maybe in the 90's?   :bash:  I don't like hunting in the cold and rain, but I sure don't want the meat to spoil before it hits the ground......   :(

I have seen them wallow with temps in the 40s and sideways rain.  I think it depends more on the mood of the particular bull.

I would agree with this to a point, a particular bull may wallow at 40F, but I would say north of 80F would be more beneficial sitting a wallow. :twocents:
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

I saw a bull yesterday early morning about 45-50 degrees that was covered in fresh wet mud. :dunno:
