average deer mileage after being shot
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:42:41 PM »
How far do your deer normally run after being shot with an arrow?  I'm sure the distance has a lot of factors but, a nice average would be nice.  Lung shot distance?  Heart shot distance?

I ask because our HOA won't allow hunting and I've got a lot of really nice deer in my yard daily.  I'd like to harvest one but, if I have to worry about it running into an unfriendly neighbors yard, it's probably not worth it.

Yea, don't put your housing at risk just to shoot a deer.  It's not worth it.

Crap.  A .308 headshot would do it.  Probably attract a bit of attention though

if it is charged with adrenaline and you bump it, it could go a LONG ways. if it is unaware why it feels dizzy it may tip over right there.

i have had them run 150 yards before or had them drop right where they stand, the doe I shot yesterday dropped where she was at. when I cleaned her out I discovered the right lung was a clean slice across and the left lung exploded and I was pulling pieces of it out(this could be from the arrow breaking not sure). It's hard to tell what they will do when that arrow makes impact, the only way I know to make sure they do not move at all is a spine shot, but the deer does not die instantly from a spine shot and will probably bellow and complain until you finish it.

many < 25 yards several over 100. With a double lung normally they will run 25 yds, stop, look back and fall over dead. Heart could be 100 yds or more.
Easier to get forgiveness than get permission. Wack one and let us know

Heck if it runs off and bleeds out on your neighbors porch you can just volunteer to help them clean up the mess and dispose of the deer.  They don't have to know you arrowed it too

I blasted a deer through the heart and both lungs once, with a .308 150 grain soft point. It ran maybe 25-50 yards and dropped dead.

If I could get a good shot at 20 yards and you're very confident you can hit both lungs and the heart, I'd probably take it.

Nope.  I'm on the $1000 per incident fine level now.  They don't like what I do with my property.

I guess it depends on the relationship with your neighbors, how big your property is, how tall the fences are, and how close knit the HOA is. My guess is the intent was to keep gunshots out of the 'hood.
