Walk-in cooler DONE!
«
on:
September 03, 2011, 08:25:11 PM »
Finally finished my walk-in cooler project. Been driving me nuts putting boned out meat in a cooler with ice and never getting it aged well enough. Actually had the reverse problem with my wifes cow last year. Was -2 when we hung it in the barn. Not good. So I vowed to have a good place to hang meat in all conditions before this bow season started.
Poured a 8'x16' slab off the side of my pumphouse and framed in a room that is 8x10. I cover the entire thing so I will have a 8x6 "porch" to work under before the meat goes in the cool room. I framed it with 2x6s and used 4" foam board for insulation. Put plywood over that and a layer of the 2" foam board depot sells around the entire inside and taped all the seems. I'm using a 13,500 btu wall mount ac unit controlled by a coolbot. I wasn't going to go this route because they are $299, but I changed my mind and am glad i did. Had a little trouble with the heater for the ac thermostat at first. Really got to get them tight together and taped off good. With ease I was able to get it down to 31.6 degrees. Haven't even tried to go any lower yet, but bet I could. I will probably run it around 36 with meat in there.
Here's a picture of the coolbot mounted up inside.

$100ish for concrete
60 2x6 @ $2 buddy works at a mill
13 2x6x16 $8
5 treated 2x6x8 $8
8 sheets of t111 $22
9 sheets of cdx @ $13
10 sheets of 2" foam board @ $19
All the 4" foam insulation I got free
Roofing I had all I needed
Spent $100ish on lights and wire.
