Hate to say it, but that looks more like a bear did it.

Hate to say it, but that looks more like a bear did it.
Nope that there is a buck rub from a very nice deer.Seen several like that and the bucks that made them...

Could be either, I guess.  Looking at the size of the ferns, the tree isn't as big as I first thought.

There is no elk in the area and he has some old scrapes like that from last year!

Just so people know what you're talking about, that is normally called a "rub" not a "scrape". But I do believe that could very well be from a deer. Would this be a blacktail?
