Outfitters
« on: September 09, 2011, 09:53:49 PM »
I have hunted this area in Southwest Washington since I was 12 and respect everyone else that hunts it which has dwindled to just myself and father and an outfitter and his clients... For the past few years there has been an Outfitter who has been guiding his clients in the area and have had a few run ins with this individual.  This year I have had my last, I was calling at around daylight and about 20 min into it I hear a truck coming so I stop and as I turn around this specific outfitter decides he is going to lay on his horn.  Trying to be nice I tell my father who wanted to knock him out do to the fact he has done this a couple other times to take a walk and as I wave this guy down he decides to have a conversation with me.  In my most polite voice I asked him how he was doing and if his clients had any luck yet.  He grinned and drove off with his partner.  I realize that he does this for a living, hence I won't mention the Outfitters name.  I just want a little advice on what to do.  I have tried killing him with kindness act.  What would you do?

Sounds like the guy is a COMPLETE a hole... My personal opinion would be to let this guy know how much of a jacka$$ he really is and tell everyone you know about this *censored* so they don't hunt with him.  If he wants to play this way give it right back!  That is my  :twocents: ... If you have tried being polite with him and he continues to be an arse and screw up your hunts give him hell right back.  He does NOT own the woods or animals in it!  WOW I am heated up and it didn't even happen to me!

I agree 100% with CamoDup as well. It's infuriating to me when these jack-holes go out and act like they own the forest.  My friends and I have witnessed "outfitters" blocking roads, harassing other hunters, or even buzzing the hills with airplanes to push the elk into another area.  It's bad enough that much of the best private hunting land is locked up for all but the outfitter's clients.  To have to put up with this crap on public land is unacceptable.  Hunting is hard work, and good tags are hard to draw.  All I ask for is a fair chance when I get out there.  Personally, I would like everyone to know this outfitters name so we are all sure never to use him.

Sneek

I know the outfitter you speak of as I used to rifle hunt up in that area years ago. He's lives in Carson and has hunted that area for most of his life and his old man hunted that area before him. He rides his snow machines up there in the winter and is the first one to clear the roads once the snow melts. I've seen many nice animals taken by him up there and I agree, he thinks he owns the place. When I last hunted there he would drive to the edge of the GPNF and hunt down into the private timberlands. He had made his own jeep trail thru to the private land from GPNF and park an old trailer at the entrance so no one could see it. I'm not freinds with the guy, just seen and talked to him a few times up there during the rifle season years ago. I would say don't let this guy bother you. He's not worth confronting. There shouldn't be many hunters up in that area now that there is no timber harvest going on in the Gif. The elk are still there but I would suspect few and far between. Good luck to you and your Dad.... I remember your camp up there years ago also...

Pretty crappy, no professional outfitter should act like that. I would just make sure you have a video camera with you next time. Then tell him you will post it online with his business name is he gives you anymore crap.

Thanks for every ones  :twocents:... I appreciate it...  I do like the video camera idea.  Ruttinwapiti I have mentioned his name to fish and game years back (his neighbor) do to his trail down below our old camp and 4 wheelers that he had stashed behind his camp. The only reason I still venture that way for a day or two during my two week bow season is so I don't have to deal with ass$$$$$, I deal with them all year long at work.

If he's doing this to you he's doing it to others as well.

I recommend filming him harassing you and turning it into the authorities. Hunter harassment is illegal and he should be punished.

Post up who it is for heavens sake.  He is the one who has chosen the inappropriate actions not you, he can live with it.

Hunter harrassment is against the law....doesn't have to be a bunny hugger.

A fishing/hunting harassment case is very rarely used in Washington. In this situation I don't think the prosecutor would file charges for several reasons. The main reason being that there is no way to prove that the outfitter purposefully honked their horn to scare away animals. A defense attorney could easily say that the individual accidentally pushed his horn (which we all have done). An example of a "good" harassment case is frequently seen in duck hunting when people go out near duck blinds with pots and pans and start banging eachother. Because how many people do that as normal day-to-day activities??

Yeah the legal part isn't strong. That's why I suggested posting it online. That way when people search his name they see a link to a YouTube video of him doing stuff like that.

Since you're being mature about it I would definitely keep it civil as you turn it up a notch. How about writing him a nice letter and explain that you're a member with an audience of thousands right here in WA. You can tell him that you'd rather not post his name, business name, and license online and ravage his reputation but you'd appreciate a written apology for the jack wagon things he's been doing in the woods.

Let us know how it turns out.

I feel your frustration... Where we hunt in Idaho there is an outfitter that has 2 camps set up approximately 8 miles apart. He runs back and forth between the two of them. Rumor has it that he used to park his rig in front of a gate near his camp and would harass anyone that tried to pass through. I guess he was quite humbled after the fish and game were notified of what he was doing and they paid him a visit. Now he just gives dirty looks as you drive by his camps; I waved at him last year as we were driving by and he obviously didn't return the gesture...oh well he has never personally did anything to me. His clients had a good year in 2010. They had three elk racks in the back of his Dodge Ram 2500; one of which almost filled the entire bed of the truck and stuck up another 18 inches above the bed as it layed in the back. That bull easily went above 350" with what I could see.

Sounds like I'd get along with your dad. If he's done this sort of thing in the past, what makes you think he'll stop. And like someone else said, I'm sure he's not just doing this to you. I wouldn't put up with it. I'm not saying I'd physically confront him, I'm not saying I wouldn't. I'd at least let people know who this POS is.

Now we are talking.  Thanks for the heads up, this may help prevent the next person in the woods from  being harrased or victimized if Shane gets wind of it.

Bad way to run a buisness, :twocents: Word of mouth travels fast, and it will get back to him, hopefully he learns from his mistake and changes his attitude or he may lose a lot of clients and get the tables turned on him when it comes to hunter harassment.
