Rifle scope opinions. Looking for a new one!
« on: September 12, 2011, 03:54:58 PM »
Hey fellas, I'm looking into buying a new scope for my .270 and was curious as to any opinions of some good scopes out there. My dad has a Weaver that I really like, and I've been using a Leupold, but wanted to shop around a bit first. So any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

What magnification do you want?

I have a redfield with the range finder. Great optics. Around $200 for 4x12.
It is all of a question of how much you are willing to spend. Look at some of those with 30mm tubes. I saw some for around 2 grand.
Usually the question you need to answer is are you a good shot. If you are, then skys the limit. If not, an expensive scope is not going to help much.
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.

It's hard to beat a Leupold VX-II in the 3-9x40. They go for right around $300. Or, look at Cabelas, they have the Bushnell 4200 in the same thing for $199 right now. It's a discontinued model that a year ago was selling for $300, and even at that price it was a good scope for the money. Those are the two I'd be looking at.

It looks like there's one for sale in the classifieds right now for $200.

I have had a lot of good experiences with the Leupold VXII in 3-9x40, that's what my primary rifle wears. Leupold's customer service is second to none. If you don't have $300 to spend a good Redfield can be had in 3-9x40 for around $200 and I hear they are all but impossible to beat for the money. If you want to go cheaper still, a BSA can be had for about $100. They are not high end scopes by any means, but they are definatly good enough to be useful and represent a good value for the money. I would however recomend 50mm objectives on the cheaper scopes like the BSAs, as it helps overcome some of the deficiencies of the cheaper glass.

There are plenty of other good scopes out there, but those are my recomendations in the $300, $200, and $100 dollar ranges. Anything more expensive, look to someone else as a lowly bodyman cannot afford Zeiss or Swarcovski optics. Hope this was somewhat helpful.

i just recently picked up a BSA 3x9x40 with illuminated mil dot reticle (RGB) for about 80 bucks from big 5 sporting goods.
http://www.bsaoptics.com/scope.aspx?productID=313

I put 5 shots into about a 2 inch pattern at 160 yards (laying prone).
Im using a double dove tail scope mount for it. Rock solid, and with a 4 inch eye relief its really nice to use.
The illuminated reticle scope are too bright and distracting in low light, but the mil dot is perfect for all light levels even in broad daylight.

So far I love this scope on my check/mauser .270.

Thanks everyone!
The leupy I have now is an older one that came on the gun when I bought and and surprisingly it does get knocked off pretty easy. I love Leupold so I'll check into the newer ones, I kinda figured they would get a good review. I like the one I have just want to update a little bit. The 2-300 dollar range is perfect, I was looking 3-9 or 10, maybe 12 if I wanted to push it but don't think its really all that necessary. So you guys nailed it, thanks again.

Heh, well Id love a swarovski, but dont have the cash,.. and yeah I guess, after not shooting a single hunting rifle for over 20 years, I think thats not bad for an old fart wearing glasses on his first box of shells. :chuckle:

As far as BSA being a good or bad scope, well thats up to each person. I love the scope thus far. I found some bushnell's  and leupolds I didnt like as much and they were 2 or 3 times as much. For me if it put dinner on the table its good enough. Besides if I got a clean 100 yard shot where I live, it would be a lucky day.

If I was in the market for a new scope I'd be all over that.  A used leupold is like a used $20 bill, it's still worth the $20 it was when it was new...

Send it in to Leupy and they will fix it or replace it at no cost to you.
