I made 2 out of some scrap steel. I used some 1.5x1.5 angle for a ladder and someexpanded metal and some 1x1 for theframe and seat. It ended up being rather heavy, hard to put up and hang... I have a buddy that took an existing 2 person laderstand and put bike wheels on it so that he could tow it in and out. I would think that may be the way to go... Unless you have a bunch of material around for free or really cheep a store bought one might be fine..
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I built a climber in welding class out of heavy grade aluminum exactly like my API Grandslam Supermag.  Camo'ed it up and sold it to a buddy of mine and he still uses it.  If you are fairly handy with a welder and can cut good angles go for it.

We used to make them  out of plywood, not climbers though.  I could come up with a drawing if interested.

a basic 8 or 10 foot ladder stand is easy to make out of wood, and lasts pretty well. works good, cheap to make, but only really good for private land and such where you dont have to carry it far.. as to maing a metal one, dont know..

It can be done....BUT.....if you are just looking for a basic hang on style stand you can get them really cheap from the sportmans guide. I have one that I got from them shipped to my door for $45. I have seen them as low as $29.99 plus shipping and their shipping rates are really good. And if you hang them and leave them and they end up  getting stolen :bash:  you are not out a bunch of $$$$....

Each one also comes with a harness.....not a great harness but a useable harness.

 :yeah:

Unless you are looking for the satisfaction of doing it yourself, there is no reason to try and make your own hang-on stands.  As stated above the hang-ons from sportsmans guide are a screamin deal.  I own quite a few of them and will be purchasing more.

Also safety has to be a concern, to make a stand that you KNOW will not fail you, you will have to make it much heavier than one that has been professionally engineered to be as light as possible. Just my thoughts.

I looked into making one too.

Figuring cost of materials, etc it was cheaper to buy one.

A homemade bike cart or game cart is a more economical project.
BUT if your a DYI guy then more power to you

You get what you pay for with some tree stands,  be carefull I would rather pay a little more for a good stand than some cheap one and go bouncing thru the branches.  You would never make up the money in co-pays alone.  Home made stands can be well built, my friend gave me one of his first stands, the down side is I have to set it up with a boom truck because it is so heavy.
