Utah Cow Elk

Me and my buddy drew the Wasatch Mountains, Springville late cow elk hunt. I know its a long shot but has anybody ever had this tag? I am planning a long weekend scouting trip out there. I am also looking for places to stay in that area, what elevation the elk will be at, etc. Any info will be appreciated. I can trade info for NM and WA elk and deer areas.

I've never had that permit, but spent the better part of my errant youth hunting in Utah.  I'm not sure if you've ever been down there, but Springville is kind of a suburb of Provo.  Plenty of motels in the area that are, quite frankly, a fairly easy drive to most anywhere in that Wasatch Mtn. range.  I don't know when the season is, but you have to remember that you are starting at an altitude of about 4,000' in Provo alone and snow can come to that area very quickly.  Wasatch Mtns.  are not as rugged for the most part as the Cascades are and that area down there is pretty criss crossed with roads and jeep trails. Expect to spend your first day or two pretty winded because without half trying you'll be up in the 6-7,000 foot elevation in a hurry.  There are now a ton of elk down there and I suspect getting a cow on the late hunt won't be much of a challenge.  I've got plenty of friends and relatives down that way and if you'd like I'll get some further info for you and repost later.  I'm sure you'll have a fun hunt and bring back a wagon load of meat!!

I actually lived in cottonwood heights for a summer internship in SLC. But, I spent most of my free time that summer exploring the Strawberry Res area. I have the tag that runs through mid January in the Springville hunt area. As far as the elevation is concerned, I'm not worried about it. I currently live in New Mexico and my house sits at 8500 feet. I run 3 miles a day, and throw in a walk with a heavy pack a few times a week, at this elevation. I am from Spokane though. That would be great if you could get some more info. If you ever need any info on hunting NM let me know. Thanks again

I'll make some inquires for you, have a couple of brothers down there, one of whom is in very close with the local wardens.  Sounds like you'll have no trouble with the altitude, thought maybe you were coming from sea level here in Wa.  Unless I miss my guess, hunting late in the year down there on a more or less control hunt should be easy pickings. I'll round up a little info for you and pm you later. Spent a lot of time on the old strawberry, pretty country from there on into the Uintas. Your coment on the "berry" brings back many good memories to me.

That area around Strawberry just amazed me. The Wasatch and Uinta's probably have some of the prettiest country I have ever seen. When I was out there I got hooked on fishing for cutthroats. I did an internship out there right after my junior year of college. It actually was really funny because I didn't want to go back to school in the fall and leave that area. So I didn't  I ended up staying till the end of October, and went back to school the following January. My girlfriend and parents were pissed Anyways, thanks again for the help, I appreciate it.

Oh and your spot on with you guess. It is a late season, controlled hunt. It took me a few points to draw....
