SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Close
« on: September 15, 2011, 09:16:04 PM »
Took the 2 oldest boys out tonight.  Went to a place with a nice clearing with a brush "island" in the middle.  Sitting there, scanning to the right when my 7 year old tugs on my shirt.  I look down at him and his eyes are locked to the left and the size of saucers.  He didn't say anything, he didn't have to.  I looked out and about 100 yards away and closing fast was a fat 2x2 blackie.  I gave them the sit sign and both kids hit the deck.  I locked the pin on the buck as he continued to move towards us.  At about 40 yards, he turned and went parallel to the road that cut through the clearing.  I could see him through the brush but had no shot.  I moved the bow to aim to the right of the brush and waited for him to appear on the other side.  As I watched him , close to within 10 yards, he very calmly and cooly turned to the left and disappeared into the woods.  It hurt to watch him walk but I felt for my 7 year old more than anything.  He thought the whole thing was super cool but, I would have liked to been able to put the buck on the ground for him.

Sounds like a great hunt to me its good for the kids to see the all the work that goes into the hunt that doesnt always pan out.  I took the neighbors son out tonight behind his farm just to look to see if any elk had wandered in gave a few cow calls while we were looking, and ended up chasing a talkative bull around the rest of the night.  My neighbors kid will be going out for his second season here in a few weeks with a muzzleloader as you can imagine hes pretty excited about it now even though we didnt even get a shot.
