Short action deer killer in the Savage 11
« on: September 26, 2011, 05:16:38 PM »
The thread on the Savage 11 Lightweight Hunter got me thinking.  It's only got a 20" barrel, so which cartridge does a fella choose?

If longest practical range is the goal, does that change your answer?  How about if minimizing recoil for a young hunter is the main concern?

the 308 has been my all time favorite round ever since I killed my first deer with it. The 243 comes in a close second. :twocents:

7mm-08 is hard to beat! Light recoil and plenty of power for N. America.

I'm a long action guy myself, I hunt with '06 and .270. However, I have always wanted a .243, I have just never needed one. That's one sweet little caliber.

I like a little more bullet weight than the .243 offers. Personally I think the .25-08 would be perfect.
