Best elk lead conical for oregon
« on: September 15, 2011, 09:08:59 PM »
First year muzzy hunting bought a new bighorn, great feeling gun! wondering what the best lead conical is for elk loads brand, weight, hollow point, or not. Also wondering when loading conicals do you bounce your ramrod or just push the bullet down until it seats against the powder, and what are most guys using as a bullet seater on there ramrod the jag it comes with or changing it out with something else      THANKS

With lead I do not bounce the ram rod I use as even pressure as possible. All lead I don't use a Hollow point I want a big flat nose to get penetration. I would suggest that you either email or call Dave at No excuse bullets and talk with him. He has been around a long time and I have had excellent results with his bullets in all my White's.

try the knight all lead bullets they come in 310 grains they are plenty for elk. they are a hollow point. they will shoot good out of the bighorn. may want to try different sabots then the one they came with as they are really hard to load.

I think someone has already suggested 'no-excuse' conicals... Dave's .503-460 is a very good bullet.  I normally get my conicals from Dan in Alaska - He makes the Bull Shop line but I am not sure he still making a lot of them...

These are slip fit conicals - no short starter needed.  The advantage that Bull Shop has over No-Excuse is that Dan offers several differnet sizes to fit many different bores...

Here is Dave's web site:  http://www.muzzleloading-bullets.com/

Just call him on the phone and he will send them right out to you...
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

Is that the grain of bullet you would reccomend i boutht 460gr no excuse 370gr maxi ball and 385gr hornady great plains but while shootingthe hornady last weekend i was bouncing the ramrod while loading and accuracy was not good at all so loaded another pulled breach plug and pushed the bullet back out the barrel while bouncing the ramrod to seat bullet it totally smashed the hollow point flat so was thinking the lead was to soft but everybody i have talked to since says even pressure on bullet till seats in powder still need to tryu this but raining here today. Also with the new easton ramrod that unscrews and extend any ideas on a bullet seater for that that is not flat and would not extend past the barrel the tipm they come with is a flat cleaning jag that is a inch long and has different threads tjan most i have seen

When I load a bullet I do not bounce the rod off the bullet.  A constant downward pressure should be all you need.  You should actually be able to feel the base of the bullet contact the powder.. and if you are new at this I would suggest you mark the ram rod with a small 'witness' mark to make sure that you get the following bullets at the same height.

I really do suggest the 460 - for me they have consistently out performed the production conical, not that the maxi ???? will not do the job they will - but I think you will achieve better accuracy with the flat based No-excuse or Bull Shop...

What I have done is cut my gun ram rod down and installed a TC super jag on the end...  This jag works as a cleaning and loading jag...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

Another vote for both the T/C 370 gr Maxi's and the No Excuses 460 gr.
