Muzzleloader loads for youth?
« on: September 14, 2011, 10:53:44 AM »
Howdy
My 11 year old Daughter wants to hunt elk with my muzzleloader this year.  She has a lot of experience with them shooting at rendezvous with her friend.  I have limited knowledge of muzzy loads.  I have one worked up for me but it is too much for her.  My question to you seasoned vets is what load would you suggest we try that won't kick her too hard but will still knock down an elk at under 100 yards.
Thank you

Try a relatively light bullet like a Barnes 290 grain. Somewhere around 80 grains of double F Triple 7 powder should be plenty without excessive recoil.

My 13 year old daughter(small for her age) is going Muzzy with me next week. I've got her shooting 70 grains 3f triple 7 with a 175 grain bullet. She liked it so much she shot all the bullets and I had to order more!

A patched round ball is pretty mild to shoot, and will still kill quite well.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Thanks for the ideas!  I'm going to give Bobcat's suggestion a try.  My Daughter is big for her age and can take a decent recoil, but not quite what I'm shooting.

When I was 11, I started muzzleloading for elk. I was like 80 when I was that age (just a tiny little kid). I shot 90 grains of powder behind a Powerbelt. I don't use powerbelts anymore, but they were really easy to load, which was a must for me at that age. She won't feel the kick when she is shooting at an elk anyway, but this load didn't kick like my current load at all.
