Modern Firearm Bivy Hunt

So I'm going to give hunting out of my pack a try this year and I'm really excited about it. Problem is I dont really know where I should go. I hunt elk in the Packwood GMU and only have come accross a handful of deer. I'd like to try the Mashel since it is close to home... am I going to find any deer above 4000' that time of year? Blacktails are kind of confusing to me I'm used to the whitetails of Pennsylvania.

The elevation will depend on snow levels.  When it gets too deep, they move to lower ground.  You are at the mercy of La Nina.

I figured so... I'd like to think there wouldn't be much snow at that time yet but who knows?

Do black tails like being up high like that?

 Mashel is mostly permit only for the most part and permits are sold out. The lower elevations of the Randle Unit has a good number of deer, Packwood is known for some big deer but doesn't necessarily put out the numbers of some of the neighboring units, like 510. That said if you already know the unit, you are ahead of the curve and fresh snow is great for finding animals. You might consider a camp in the NF portion of the Skook, I know some others that have had some success in that area as well.

theres plenty of public in the mashel. If your considering bivy hunting you might want to back pack into the glacier view. I knew a few guys that did that and did pretty well in there but the snow hits early up there so it really depends on the year ive been up there during muzzy elk season in 4 inches of snow. Not a lot of deer but some nice bucks and bears to be had.

just prepare for snow and dont wander into the park. It wont be an easy hunt not a lot of deer but there are some nice bucks in there.

 Operating under the assumption you haven't scouted it yet, I would highly urge you to make several scouting trips if you are going to attempt the Glacier View, it's not one I would go in blind on but that's just me. It isn't all that big of an area though I imagine there are a few animals in there. Roughly 12 square miles of the hundreds in Mashel.
