German Shorthaired Pointer Outta Commission! Update!
« on: September 18, 2011, 12:41:12 AM »
So here i am on deployment and i get a email from my fiance asking me if this has ever happened to my little girl Annie Oakley, which she is talking about her nose in the pictures and its around the outside of her ears aswell. i have never seen this before either and ive tried to research every means possible to figure it out, I'm in another country and freaking out cuz my Bird dog is hurt and all the vet can do is tell us they have no idea what is wrong with her and they have never seen anything like this before so they send her home with antibiotics and steroids, 400 dollars later and still a bird dog outta commission for the up coming season that i been looking forward to get back to when i return from deployment. I'm not trying to sound selfish cuz the main picture is that she gets better but darn the luck i tell ya. and if anyone might know what that looks like please chime in.

Kyle,

Sorry to hear about your dog. What Vet are you using?

She took her to banfield there in everett she said by the mall, its the only one who could get her in at the time, i feel like i got cheated. almost makes me wonder if them vets where text book doctors cuz there has to be a way to figure out what that is on her nose, and theres not much she coulda got in around our house unless one of the neighbors did something to her.

You should try Pilchuck Veterinary. They are off of Hwy 2.

Banfield Vets are terrible. We've had awful experience using them.

FYI, we used Banfield Vets for many many years with no complaints. Got great care for our pets. Our dog lived to 18 1/2 years. No BS, 18+ years and finally had to put him down.

Keep us posted on your dog! Hopefully something simple like an alergic reaction to something that she just scratched a bunch...

i have a german shorthair as well. you may try takeing her to the silver lake veterinary clinic. i would have your fiance do some research and get a second opinion. i used to be stationed in everett when i was in the navy. it looks like it may be a allergic reaction to something. hope she gets better soon.

+1 for the Pilchuck vet hospital.  Dr Duke down there is very good with hunting dogs.

BTW, years ago the Silver Lake vet referred me to Pilchuck when they could not diagnose an inner ear infection that was paralyzing my lab.  Pilchuck saved that dog for me.

I have seen a nose like that before..It could be a very simple cure...Is your dog being kept in a dog crate or kennel for a long periods of time?  If so it could that she (he) is rubbing their nose on the crate door trying to get out and is causing self distruction to the nose.  Ask your GF.   A shorthair needs to run a few times a week it could be just not getting out and going stir crazy.  Here's hope to an easy solution.

Blue Moon he says it is by her ear on on her body to.

I agree with Machias.  It looks like something she may have gotten into.

Did she slowly develop these spots over say a few weeks/Months or is this something that just happened with in a few days?

Is it getting worse?  Or is it starting to heal up?

Annie has all the free roam she wants when she is home by herself she never gets locked up in a kennel and runs 3 miles a day lol, my fiance let her outside before work at 5am then her dad had came over and let her outside at 7am and noticed it, so it had to have happened sometime around then just within a few hours. after her trip to the vet on saturday they gave her steroids and antibiotics but still dont know the cause or what it is, but today when she emailed me a pic of her and said it looked like it was drying up. i did read that it could be (eosinophillic furunculosis) just by luck i was able to find a article on this and it seems to be rare that it happens but im hoping her biopsy comes back soon and narrows this sucker down all the pics associated with other dogs makes it look like it could be it aswell, i hate to see her injured cuz she is the best dang dog i ever had and one of the sweetest. i sure do appreciate your alls concerns and input.

Possible bee stings and reactions.  I have a GWP, and she found herself a hornets nest and got stung on the face a few times, and got a nice rash/swelling.  Nothing life threatening, but it bothered her for a few days...

If it's all over I'd think some sort of allergic reaction like hives? Wild. Hope she is doing better and you can pin-point the problem. Scary anytime their mouth/nose swells up.

I'd be willing to bet the dog got into a Yellowjacket nest.  Just a hole in the ground, but the nest can be bigger than a canteloupe.  They are very aggressive especially this time of year.  Looks like they could only sting through the areas where the fur was real short, or none at all.  [fingers crossed]

I've seen this exact thing before! I had a black lab growing up that showed up with that on her nose one day. Probably something she picked up in the woods. Back then we used VCA for vet services and they put steroids on it and probably gave a shot. It's was almost like a bunch of pustules all over her nose. It did eventually go away but it took a while and the nose never really looked the same. Several years later she developed a large tumor in her neck and had to be put down. Don't know if the two were related at all...
VCA Battleground, wa has seen it before. About 12 years ago. Her name was Pepsi, maybe they can give you some info on it.

Results came back from Annie Oakleys biopsy and id like to say thanks to Everett Banfield vet for charging 400 bucks for a test that came back with them saying they dont know what is wrong with her, dang do i feel cheated and mad that they got me for that much money for nothing! On the other hand her nose is scabbing over and healing aslong as we leave the cone of shame on her so she dont paw at it, but the vet said no bird hunting for her till its completley healed. Which sucks cuz all this time on deployment i been looking forward to season an getting her out.

$400 down the drain - I'd request a refund and get a second opinion. Banfield sucks.  :bash: :bash:

We had a bee sting on our shorthair and it looked nothing like this except the very end of the nose was about the same size. On ours the nose swolled up huge for about 2 hours then went down before the end of the day and the next day you could not tell she had been stung. The vet just gave the dog something like benedryl( which was what i told my wife it needed) It was really funny looking and had us all laughing after we diagnosed at the vet. Last year my shorthair got swiped on the nose by an animal I think. I thought maybe badger. That scrape bled for quite a while and I never figured out what got him. It was a bloody scrape and more towards one side just a 1 inch patch behind the wet part of the nose. I hope she gets better. she looks like my 3 year old GSP's sister. Let me know. PM if you want to get out in the field. Do you hunt west side or east side. My dogs are always getting cut up and put out of the rotation so I know how you feel. Paul

That is one of two things......................lupus as suggested above,or  skin disorder( Red mange) that was rampant in shorthairs in the 70's affectionately known as " Red German Crud".Or could be  the dog rooting around in the dirt mousing? My buddies shorthairs get noses like that from rooting around after mice, bacteria in the dirt causes it.Looks pretty sore.Get some " Vetricin" from the feed store and smear on it,Similar to "Schreiners" herbal horse liniment excepth the vetricin doesn't have the cayenne pepper in it.Chances are this is a fungal problem.

Not saying this is what it is , but ask vet to check into it!!    My lab had a similar thing. the vet sad it was a fungus which is in the ground naturally. Dogs get it from digging their nose in the ground, going after moles, field mice, etc. Lots antibiotics and a lose of hair on the affected areas for my dog.

Had a Golden who ended up with Staff infection as a Pup and lost all the hair off his nose. Looks close to that, took a lot of meds and the wife had to wipe him down every day. But he did pull thru and turned out ok but never had the hair grow back.
