I would have bought one Discover pass, if I could use it on whichever vehicle I was driving that day. But they want me to buy one for each vehicle, which means I'd have to buy four. So I'm "boycotting" them. I'm not buying a Discover pass and will just avoid going on state lands where it is required. I do have some spots on DNR land I may hunt this year, but I will be parking elsewhere, and then walking in to the state land. So no pass required. It's only required if you drive on the state land.

Was out this weekend for the youth hunt, and discovered that the state folks have started closing the "walk in" loophole.

I have seen these signs posted in the Bluegrade area of Douglas County.  I hunted there years ago, and it is all private property that wdfw got the landowners to open to the hunters for access during hunting seasons.  It is not public land.  The reason it is strictly controlled now, is that too many people were using it as a dumping ground: cans, bottles, washing machines and clothes dryers, even old refrigerators.  It was disgusting.  The controlled access is the alternative to the landowners closing the area down to all activities.  A prime example of a few pigs making it hard on everybody.

id be curious to see how a fine from not being parked in the lot and walking into public state land would hold up in court
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

I just got a nice letter in the mail from our local courthouse filled with a dandy $99 fine for "failure to display the Discover Pass"

This was issued from Birch Bay State Park.  I call B.S. on this one and will take it to court for sure.  I am very dilligent about displaying the pass everytime I go there just because I know they are looking and issuing tickets.  I even had a polite discussion with the park ranger, a couple days prior to the day the ticket was issued, about the pass.

So now I have to go to court and prove I had the pass displayed.

What's stopping the park rangers from going along and issuing tickets to everyone using this excuse for a violation?  Even if they have a pass displayed or not, now you have to prove you had it displayed.

I don't have a problem with paying $30.00 or whatever for the pass... It's good for a entire year and good for all the state parks too for day use. So it's really not a big deal. It's better than jacking up license plate fees and hunting and fishing license fees. Don't buy one and get caught without one and pay even a bigger fine... $109.00 Fine VS. a $30.00 permit. Hmmmm?? What would you do?

The pass is only good for a year if you don't have to buy new plates. If you buy the pass in January and have to get new plates in September then you will need to buy a new pass. :bash:

No you don't have to buy a new permit!! You can call the Dept. of fish & wildlife tell them you got new plates and they will either send you a new permit with your new license plate preprinted or a sticker for your current pass. Not sure though. My uncle went through the same thing and that what he did.

So when you buy your hunting and fishing license and get the WDFW parking permit do you still have to get a Discover Pass?

Depends.

If you use only WDFW areas you do not.

If you use DNR and/or State Park areas you do.

The answer to your question is no, you wont need to buy a discover pass.  Save your money and buy a Weco St. Helens tree farm map.  You won't be hunting any state land in the Winston, besides, you won't be there that long being tagged out the the first day.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

Call state parks and try that. They will tell you that you need to purchase a new pass for your new plates.

:yeah:  Just another "oversight" from our great leaders.  But they have assured us it will all be fixed for next year.    :bash:

Of course they are going to tell that you need to buy a new pass. State Parks get 84% of the $30.  That's $25.20 from every pass, and DNR and WDFW get to split the other 16%.

I think that if I buy a pass I should get to decide who I want the majority to go to.

And to top that off every time you renew your vehicle tabs the $5.00 parks donation is automatically added to the price.  That's $30.00 bucks that they will never get from me.

I really don't like the idea of having to purchase this pass. What really pisses me off is that it can't be transfered from one vehicle to the next. I own a Dodgeram Ram & Jeep Cherokee that is used for off road & hunting and the wife and I both have commuting cars that is used for both work & pleasure. I will not be buying 4 of these Discover Passes or be donating 5 bucks when I renew my tabs anymore! For the 1 license number they want you to enter on the pass, I just put my name there. If they do not like that, they can kiss my ass!  The more you give them, the more they want! Too bad there is so much wasteful spending!!!!!!

I was down to the Tarpiscan area-part of the Colockum area this morning.  First time I've been there all summer.  At the entrance to the WDFG Area there is now a "Discover Pass Required" sign posted, and down in the lower right corner it says "Or Parking Permit".  (not sure of exact words)  I take it to mean the permit you get when you buy a Hunting License, which I have.  There are no campgrounds there, so only the non-hunters that go in there to hike, mountain bike, birdwatch, or kiss the rattlesnakes would need the Discover Pass.  At least now the squishy tree-huggers have to dig into their pockets to go in there, not just us hunters who have been paying for years.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

Sunday I was checked by F&W Enforcement and after all the formalities were over we bs'd for awhile.

One of the things I was told was that many officers are not going to write tickets for not having the pass as they don't believe in it. I told him on one hand I am glad to hear that, but on the other, since I bought mine to be legit, that I would rather they ticket everyone who doesn't have it.

He then stated that they use it as a reason to check compliance on other issues. About ten minutes later another rig drove up, without a pass, and he had them out of the rig with ID in hand. I am pretty sure they weren't hunting and since it had been a long day, I did not stick around to see if they got a ticket for not having the pass.
